Missionary Experiences

Two sister missionaries in my mission were raped

CA girl Jam. 2013

This took place back in the 1990s. I arrived in the mission field with 5 other sisters. One of them, who I'll call Sister Smith, was assigned a trainer who was just amazingly beautiful. I found out she paid for her mission by modeling professionally. The two were assigned to a small, coastal town.

My sister's mission president could have killed her.

My sister just came home from her mission to Latin America with a huge, scary lump on her thumb.

She had had it for two months. Her mission didn't let her see a doctor because they didn't want to deal with it. They figured she could just take care of it when she got home in a couple months.

Teaching to manipulate - straight from the LDS manual

Jesus Smith Nov. 2012

The following comes from the LDS [Mormon] Missionary manual
Summary: Act devastated if the investigator doesn't do what you say before being baptized.

Things my Mission Presidents said

Things my Mission Presidents said in zone conference...
I have a couple of quotes that stuck with me all these years, probably because I was a bit perturbed to hear them from "spiritual" leaders.

"Well, you know what they say: The looks of your eternal companion depend on how well you served as a missionary...and as far as I'm concerned, that means prettier."

Missions in dangerous areas

The ladies on BBC are debating this right now.

I have to agree, if I had a son or daughter and they wanted to do a mission in a "dangerous" place. I'd be pretty nervous too. I think it's naive to rely only on faith.

More on the mormon missionary numbers game (long)

runtu may 2012

From my blog:

A friend of mine recently read my book and wrote to me wondering why I hadn’t spent much time writing about the message we missionaries brought and why that message resonated with the people we baptized. I didn’t have a good answer, but after I thought about it, I realized that the message was not really an important part of being a Mormon missionary. Missions were about obedience to our leaders and increasing the number of church members.

My mission president, under direction from Salt Lake, told us we needed to convert more men.

Actually, what he said was that we needed to concentrate more on finding more golden converts, which he described as those would be strong priesthood leaders. This was back in 1997, and the church was noticing that its teenage elders were really good at converting girls, welfare recipients, and crazy people, but not so good at finding future bishops.

Mormon Missions cut short for medical reasons

by Just Once Feb 2012

I've been struck by the seemingly high number of missionaries returning for "medical reasons."
What's the deal? What's actually going on? Is there something going on we're not aware of? Or have missions actually become more dangerous?

Mormon Missions that excel at destroying Mormon testimonies.

After mentioning that I was a California San Diego Alumni, I was shocked to find there were a lot of us on here. In retrospect I should not be surprised because you get exposed to a lot of things in San Diego that would make you question your testimony. That, and the mission had three presidents in a roll who would make you question your testimony.
