Mormon friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
by mothermayeye Apr 2012
She emailed asked me where I was going to watch conference, I told her I wouldn't be watching it. She, of course, asked why (assuming I normally watched it which I don't lol) and I told her because I have recently learned some interesting thing about TSCC [this so called church] and I know it isn't true.
Although in email, I swear I could hear her gasp! She responded with the typical TBMs brainwashed response, " You are obviously under the influence of Satan! I have a testimony of the church and feel very blessed by my choice to be endowed and sealed to (DH) and kids. JS is a true prophet and honest man.. chosen by God. You've been lead astray just like the prophets said we would if we doubted or looked at those evil websites. That's why you've lost the spirit. So Good luck with all of that, I hope you find what you're looking for." LMAO!!! Oh don't worry, I finally have! ;-)
She also told me that it was by looking up anti mormon stuff, that is why Satan has me where he wants me. Haha. I calmly explained that there is a huge difference between anti information and facts.
Its so easy to see the brainwashing when your out. I felt like asking her how many times she's bent over and whispered the religious chat into her children ears to repeat and burn into her kids minds, I'd like to bear my testimony, I know this church is true, JS is a true prophet..." OMG! Cults number one tactic... REPETITION! And that is what TSCC is all about... repetition.
What other responses have people got?

Re: TBM [Mormon] friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
Heard that before. My question. How would you know what satan's up to? You have a personal relationship with him? Is he confiding in you? Or is someone else telling you this? How would they know?

Haha. Exactly! But like everything else she believes, she doesn't know him, just believes whatever she is told to believe.

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
I have a question and a comment. First she is a jerk to say Satan has you in his grasp. But I am wondering if Mormons who are still religious ever say "The spirit of God told me I was in the wrong church" Then say "I am listening to that voice of God speaking to me." It takes away their Satan reference right quick.
And soon my little grandson will have to start repeating all that garbage you spoke of...JS is a true prophet, I know this church is true....yada, yada. It sickens me. Glad you thought of asking her about all that...Next time, do it.

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
You've got that right. The "testimony" is brainwashing, pure and simple. Plant the thoughts into the subconscious, then repeat. They have their testimony meetings to keep those fragile thoughts firmly implanted. I'm surprised someone doesn't bring a watch on a chain and swing it back and forth in front of their faces. Repeat after me....I know the church is true....I know the church is true....

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
::eyeroll::
I know how she feels about being shocked because when I still believed I was surprised by several people I knew that left and couldn't understand why they did until I came about discovering things for myself.
But I would never ever have the audacity to tell such a person they are under the influence of satan!! That is so rude, along with her " I hope you fine what you are looking for" Why do people have to be so condescending??

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
I remember the neighbor lady, mother of my childhood friends(both boys went on missions) she gave my mom a picture of Jesus for me and said I could use this. I was 17-18 at the time. Her husband was a known child-molester who actually confronted my 7 year old sister once. It was insulting and comical all at the same time to my skeptical teen brain.

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
To answer you question about responses I have got from TBMs, I got "what made you feel that way?" and "oh, wow, what changed your mind?"
However I've only told 3 TBMs so I haven't had a chance for much range of response yet. But I guess those people asked me because they are actually invested in me as family members.

I got told, "Well I won't insult you for your stance," but I cut her off by laughing at her. "Insult me? You couldn't possibly insult me." She wasn't sure what to say to that, so she just kind of went, "Okay."

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
Satan is just a boogyman meant to keep you from doubting. It's all very simple, you see.
1. Create a fake doctrine that promises something very appealing.
2. Find some gullible idiots who will believe your story. It would also help if you're charasmatic and good at manipulating people.
3. Once you get enough gullible idiots believing, they'll likely try to get their friends and family to convert.
4. Eventually, you'll get a pretty good sized group if you're good at what you do. Then your followers will reproduce, and indoctrinate their offspring with your doctrine. This is where the boogyman has to be really thrown into the mix. Obviouslly, you've used this scare tactic to convince certain people, but this is even better because from a very young and impressionable age, they'll begin believing in this threat and with enough indoctrination, they'll be very reluctant to question your teachings because of their fear of the boogyman.
It's just a cheap scare tactic, really...

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
Haha! I love all your comments and responses. TSCC is such a fear and guilt based church and even when I still believed I could still see that! How come so many others can't see that. She was feeling the fear and guilt today when she basically said she wouldn't ever look at those websites because that would be satanic. Not her words but... implied.
Fear and guilt aren't Christ-like lol

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
does your friend think you still believe in jesus and god, or just stop believing in the mormon church, cuz there's a big difference. if you still believe in jesus and god, then satan has not got a hold of you( that's my opinion)

Now that im done sorting out that the BoM and TSCC is a lie, I am sorting out my belief in God and Jesus thru deep research, so far it isn't looking good after studying the history of God. BUT Idk yet ;-) im getting there.

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
Remind her that Satan has been called "the father of all lies." Then ask her why the Mormon church doesn't show happy family pictures of Joseph Smith and ALL of his 30+ wives. Why don't the official illustrations of Joseph translating the golden plates show his head in a hat? Why was the introduction to the BoM changed? Why was the temple ceremony changed? Why did Apostle Boyd K. Packer, echoing Apostle Dallin Oaks, say "some things that are true are not very useful?" Why doesn't the church open its books for all the world to see?
What does Satan need with poor little ol' you, when he has such easy pickings at the rich, powerful LDS church headquarters?

This afternoon I was informed by my tbm brother that I had "cursed" my entire family. Really? After a while, the manipulation is so blatant that it just becomes humorous. I just started to laugh, because after 40 years, and about 5 dozen similar phone calls, email and texts, I cant believe I ever fell for it. I see a light at the end of this tunnel :) and dont think satan ever had anything to do with it :)

@ ambivalentmo-I agree with everything you said! So clear now, humorous, Satan never had a part in any of it.
So crazy they don't hear how they sound when they say those retarded things.
imaworkinonit
what a dorky friend
In all my TBM days I NEVER would have e-mailed someone to ask them where they were going to watch conference.
Why would she think it is her business if or where you watch it? She sounds like one of the self-righteous types who wants to make sure everybody is behaving.

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
I've talked to my sister a about my about face. To her credit, she doesn't say anything until I bring up how differently I see the world now. I think she feels like i'm implying she doesn't think rationally (might be true). Then she lets me know in a gently way what a tricky rat bass turd satan is and how he can get ANYONE. I don't say this but really want to: Um sorry, i see through the satan trick. If he is so powerful, tell his lazy butt to pay me a visit so I can document his existence and win the money for first one with proof of supernatural bullcrap. Okay, people, last time, god desperately needs satan to be true.
I am so glad to be done with superstition. Now, i wonder wear I put my jupiter talisman?
Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan is a good book for seeing through some of the myths.

By your "entire family" does he mean him? Is he blaming your apostasy for his problems? Or does he mean your spouse and kids?

Re: TBM friend told me "I'm under influence of Satan" because I told her I no longer believe...
That's a big problem I've found, that if you tell your friends how differently you now see the world, they instantly go, "So you must think I'm really stupid now, huh?" Then you're stuck backpedaling and insisting that you didn't say that at all. But they sure do take it that way.

I've been told that I am Satan. Not that I'm influenced by Satan, but that I am Satan.
You should all now adjust the Satan stories in your head so that The Adversary is a petite woman of a certain age, nicely rounded, (okay, plump). She wears glasses and smiles a lot. The state of the world, and of the morridor in particular, keeps her eyebrows in almost permanently raised position.
I think the temple film needs to be reshot. I recommend multiple close-ups of my (Satan's) boobs.

Mormons seem to think that anyone with a working, independent brain is influenced by Satan.
Let's assume this is true. Okay, then. Satan is the good influence, the one that wants you to realize your full potential as a human being.

My TBM ex actually tried an exorcism on me when I said I didn't believe in the church's teachings. I ended up filing for divorce shortly after that, and eventually resigned just before the divorce was finalized.

Holy cow. I'm not sure what I'd do if someone tried to perform an exorcism on me. I'd figure they'd lost their mind. That would be extremely unnerving.

People are SO crazy! *swears
My TBM aunt told me that I was under the influence of Satan when I was 9 months pregnant because I wasn't going to church and she thought my baby was going to have "something wrong with it" because I wasn't being a faithful member. I told her she was a fucking crazy bitch and I never wanted to talk to her again. I haven't talked to her in 7 months and it feels good!
