Apostle Holland Example on Personal Revelation

vastique Mar. 2013

For whatever reason I was torturing myself with reading biographies of the henchma. . . . um . . I mean "apostles". Came across this lil gem below.

Now, THAT is skill. To be able to turn on a dime and change an abject failure into a "teaching moment".

I'm frankly a bit jealous . . . .

"The Right Road
Elder and Sister Holland have three children. Their son Matt recalls that spiritual training was a part of everyday family life. On an outing when Matt was 12, he had his first experience with personal revelation.

Returning from an exploring trip on backcountry roads, he and his father came to an unexpected fork and could not remember which road to take. It was late in the day, and darkness would soon be enveloping them. Seizing a teaching moment, Jeffrey Holland asked his son to pray for direction. Afterward, he asked his son what he felt, and Matt replied that he felt strongly they should go left. Replying that he had felt the same way, his father turned the truck to the left. Ten minutes later, they came to a dead end and returned to take the other route.

Matt thought for a time and then asked his father why they would get that kind of answer to a prayer. His father replied that with the sun going down, that was undoubtedly the quickest way for the Lord to give them information—in this case, which one was the wrong road. Now, though the other road might not be familiar and could be difficult in places, they could proceed confidently, knowing it was the right one."

Whaaaa...?

Fetal Deity
I find myself simutaneously sighing and pulling out fistfuls of hair ...
Alternative (BETTER!) answer: "Son, the Lord has revealed to me that had we chosen the correct road initially, we would have encountered a migrating herd of hungry bears--yes, son, a HERD!"

Good grief.

And this is a story he's so proud of it's on his public bio.

I'm simply flabbergasted.

seriously.

I consider myself mildly intelligent, but I couldnt for the life of me figure out what the point of his lesson was.

Hahaha. It's only revelation when it's convenient.

The same way Mo's use some Brigham Young quotes and ignore others. Only when it's convenient.

I'm not sure which is more imbecilic, thinking that it was an answer to a prayer, or posting it online as an answer to a prayer.

...After prayerful consideration, I believe the fridge has told me that the latter is more imbecilic.

if they chose the right path it would've been an answer to prayer.

since they chose the left path it's STILL an answer to prayer.

What?

"they could proceed confidently, knowing it was the right one."

umm. did they not proceed confidently after getting their so-called spiritual confirmation that the left road was right?

They must've DOUBTED!

Oh, I get it now!

So the prophets/apostles receiving revelation to build a mega mall, buying up real estate by the thousands of acres, providing financial support for bigotry and intolerance, and generally doing everything they can to further Lucifer's plan by limiting the choices of their membership and as many non-members as they can, is REALLY just the lord showing them the WRONG way to lead the church, so that when everything collapses they can take the 1,200 members still left and confidently stride down the path of truth and light.

It all makes sense now...

So why didn't they get personal "revelation" to go down the right road and they would have had confidence that way.

I don't get it. The only lesson I get from this is that personal revelation is irrelevant.

Hahaha. My eyes rolled to the back of my head while I pondered that, trying to figure out if it made any sense whatsoever.

It didn't. How stupid.

Maybe Holland's son Matt is a closet apostate and was subversively trying to show how his Dad is really a dodo.
