I'm happy to share my reading list and my own library:

These are found in LDS libraries:

Reading list LDS Church history from their own authors.

All found in the REFERENCE Section of the LDS Church libraries: Ward/Stake houses, Institute of Religion:
[own some of these in our private library]
This is documented, reliable original material. Can't beat their own words.

"History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"
7 Vol's by Joseph Smith Jr

"A Comprehensive History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"
6 Vol's by B H Roberts (We own this one when it was published in paperback in the 70's)

"Readings in L.D.S. Church History from Original Manuscripts" 3 Vol's by William E. Berrett & Alma P Burton
(This series was the text for Church History at BYU in the 50's- from my believing husbands collection)

"Journal of Discourses" 26 vol's
(These are on line, and in my view, best read in sections)

Others from my library:
Each one sheds light on some area of Mormonism and it's beginnings, and how it was lived initially.
These are LDS authors. Most are not known to the average Mormon.

"An American Prophets Record: The Diaries And Journals Of Joseph Smith" Editor: Faulring, Scott H.; Author: Smith, Joseph

"In Sacred Loneliness The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith" by Todd Compton

"The First Mormon" by Donna Hill

"Early Mormonism and the Magic World View" by D Michael Quinn

"Joseph Smith Begins His Work" Vol 1, 2 by Wilford C Wood
Contains the original: The Book of Mormon,The Book of Commandments, The Doctrine and Covenants, The Lectures on Faith , the Fourteen Articles of Faith

This is the original 1830 BOM and other original books used when the church started. It's very different from the latest publications!

Others -- very informative.
"No Man Knows My History" by Fawn Brady

"Mormon Enigma Emma Hale Smith" by Linda King Newell and Valeen Tippetts Avery

"Inside the Mind of Joseph Smith Psychobiography and The Book of Mormon" by Robert D Anderson

"Insider's View of Mormon Origins" By Grant H Palmer
. ...by his own hand upon papyrus Charles M Larson

This is one of several on the Hofmann Affair
"The Mormon Murders" by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith
One of several on the Mt. Meadows Massacre
"American Massacre The tragedy at Mountain Meadows Sept 1857" by S. Denton

"What the Mormon Missionaries Don't Tell You The Rest of the Story": by Gerald Paul

Misc - I started with some of these and found them very helpful
Some are books on "the big picture" that are helpful putting Mormonism in perspective.

"The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell

"Demon Haunted World" by Carl Sagan

"Why People Believe Weird Things" by Michael Shermer

"The Age of Reason" by Thomas Paine

"The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer

"The Four Agreements" By Don Miguel Ruiz
(This is the one with the simple principles that have been the best reminder when dealing with difficult people.)

That's a good way to recycle your books! Never know who is really interested and will learn something that is valuable to them.

Unfortunately, they may no longer be able to find these gems in any of their local LDS buildings. Last fall there were a couple of posts on RFM regarding the purging of LDS meeting house libraries/resource centers:

Thanks for that info. I had seen these on a CD or on line through the LDS Church at one time. Also, they were in LDS Institute Libraries. I wonder if they are all gone or if any are available, anywhere in the LDS Church. I think they can be checked out from libraries - university libraries are the best. I'll do more checking.

I found some of the books on ebay!
Found some on Amazon also.

(NOTE Apparently, current instructions from the LDS Church indicate these are no longer in the libraries.)

This book is a real eye opener into the inner workings of early Mormonism, exposing the extreme secrecy of the Mormon/Freemasonic leadership. It starts in Oct. 1844 and ends in Mar. 1869. It also gives an excellent portrayal of the starvation and deaths of hundreds of people at Winter Quarters, while B.Y. was giving parties in his temporary council house. The second volume tells about the early settlement of Utah, the dealing with the Indians, creation of the counties, along with the many court cases Stout handles as a district attorney. There are some little gems hidden in among the somewhat monotonous court cases, such as the time they had a party with over 100 bottle of champaign.

Last year I found a 1964 first edition of the two volumes, edited by Juanita Brooks, for only $30. They've become more scarce and expensive in the past few months. It is posted online by his living descendents, along with his autobiography.

The history of Joseph Smith by his mother.

This book, edited by two apostles and endorsed by a sitting church president, makes it hard to call anti mormon.

The gems found in it give great insight into the Smith family.

- As a young man Joseph told stories to his family about the ancient inhabitants of the Americas.

- Joseph Smith Sr. had several visions long before his son did. Two of his vision made their way into the Book of Mormon as Lehi's visions.

- The night Joseph "obtained" the plates, he and Emma stole a horse and wagon.

Currently I'm reading "Without You, There is No Us" which is an autobiography of a South Korean immigrant turned American journalist who posed as a missionary to teach at a school in Pyongyang. Some of the culture quirks, like assigned friends and students are not supposed to be alone seems quite familiar.

I highly recommend this book. It's fascinating.

I'm at that point in recovery where I'm no longer interested in reading more books on the subject.

However, I've read some psychology books that end up being relevant to Mormonism. "Lie Spotting," "The Sociopath Next Door," etc.

Stray Mutt

I hear ya. I hit that point a couple of years ago. That is why all of my books are in a dresser in the garage. :-) In fact, I ran out of steam and never opened two of them! (They are not on my list-- didn't read them!)
