"And they also had horses, and asses, and there were elephants,
and cureloms, and cumoms; all of which were useful unto man, and more especially the
elephants, and cureloms, and cumoms" (Ether 9:19). So far, we know that cureloms are USEFUL. "After they [the Jaredites] had come down into this valley by the command of the Lord they collected seeds and grain of every kind, and animals of almost every description, among which, no doubt, were the elephant and the curelom and the cumom, very huge animals that existed in those days, and after travelling and crossing, we suppose, the sea that was east of where the Tower of Babel stood, and travelling through the wilderness many days, with their flocks and herds, their grain and substance, they eventually came to the great Pacific ocean, on the eastern borders of China or somewhere in that region" (Orson Pratt, JoD 12:339-340). Now we know that cureloms are VERY HUGE ANIMALS. This rules out tapirs and salamanders. "Now to prepare them against these contingencies, and that they might, have fresh air for the benefit of the elephants, cureloms or mammoths and many other animals, that perhaps were in them, as well as the human beings they contained, the Lord told them how to construct them in order to receive air, that when they were on the top of the water, whichever side up their vessels happened to be, it mattered not; they were so constructed that they could ride safely, though bottom upwards and they could open their air holes that happened to be uppermost" (Orson Pratt, JoD 12:340). Finally Orson reveals all: Cureloms are MAMMOTHS! And the Jaredites had elephants and mammoths in their barges with them! I want to bear you my testimony that I know all this is true, and we are so blessed to have the scriptures and the Journal of Discourses to tell us about cureloms. Inthenameofjesuschristamen. |

Ode to a Curelom by Laura D. This curious creature called Curelom was useful and big and probably strong. Such mystery surrounds this elusive being and my mind ponders to understand without ever seeing this creature of old so big and so bold. Oh faithless, wretched human that I am! Dear Mormon God help me understand. Down on my knees I have fasted and prayed I'm seeking a sign still, your answers have stayed. Dear Joseph Smith, What were you on about? What is the Curelom I hear so much about? I hear they're delicious and mighty nutritious. But, it's really hard to eat something fictitious! |
