It's Christmas for me too. I live in Utah County. There are only two Saturdays a year that I can go to Costco and shop in peace. Well, at least between 10-12 and 2-4.

The brethren clearing have their garments in a twist over this. I still get ward emails. There was a special Relief Society meeting for the ward a few months ago with visitors from the stake and the topic was dedicated to wearing garments. It isn't just young women who aren't wearing garments appropriately or regularly. I've noticed that middle age women in more upscale Mormon communities don'

As others have stated, it's pretty rare for TBMs to attend services of other churches. Mormons often consider themselves to be experts in other religions without ever visiting them. I had the opportunity to attend other churches fairly often as a child simply because my parents are both converts and all of my extended family are members of other religions. I doubt my TBM husband, who has a lon

You're right. The church just doesn't get it. The community feeling in the branch you describe was what I wanted the church to be, but it just wasn't. I've often wondered if the truth about the church would have mattered as much to me if I had felt a sense of belonging in the wards that I attended as an adult.

I read about this in the DN this morning. They couldn't have added the word "covenant" in the broadcast any more if they tried. Lots of talk about covenant keeping, covenant daughters, covenant path, etc. It was also announced that young women are eligible to go to the temple to receive their endowment once they've graduated high school. Got to get those 18 year-old young women used

I think religion has always provided a good cover and alibi for the phony and morally bankrupt. Of course, there are plenty of genuinely terrific people who are drawn to religion as well, but they tend to be the ones who don't feel the need to tell you how wonderful they are. I don't consider social media to be the best invention ever, but I've found that it can be a useful tool to help differ

"I'm surprised that LDS Inc. didn't buy the property years ago when it was probably a lot cheaper." It wasn't for sale. The LDS church has been wanting to buy the Kirtland temple and other historical properties for years. I don't think the C of C would be selling if it didn't need the funds. Now that the church owns more historical church sites, it can control the narrative even more

I'm sure lots of wards are planning a very fun potluck dinner. Last names A-K should bring salads and last names L-Z should bring desserts. Since it will be a big celebration, wards will provide paper products and hot dogs.

Missions may be less stress and more fun these days, but it seems like more missionaries than ever are cutting their missions short and coming home early.

I would love to know if the church has excommunicated either of the women. Or maybe the church still reserves excommunication for the worst of the worst...those posting true, unflattering information about the church on social media, or for adults having consensual sexual relationships, aka the sin next to murder.

The thing is, many Mormons have never visited a church other than their own. I think many are completely oblivious to the fact that other churches often have a beauty and specialness that Mormon churches lack. It's like being the ugly duckling and everyone else knows it but you.

GNPE- To answer your question, yes, Utah has many charter schools. There are some that essentially operate as private religious schools at tax payer expense. A somewhat recent episode of Mormon Stories discussed a charter school in the Salt Lake area that is run by the Allred polygamous group.

I honestly think a law like this will come back to bite those who think it's necessary in order to protect their children against liberal views. In many areas of Utah, teachers tend to be just as religious and conservative as the parents and legislators who want this. I raised my children in Utah County and I've always been surprised at what was ok in public schools here. For example, at one o

School districts in Utah arrange to sell a little land to the church next to nearly every high school and junior high so that the church can build a seminary building. School schedules must accommodate the church's seminary programs so that kids can walk next door and be indoctrinated in the middle of the school day. And the big worry is that that public school teachers aren't politically or reli

It's a brilliant system. The church teaches girls not to settle for anything but a RM. In order for boys to date and marry Mormon girls, they must serve a mission. The church uses girls to keep the boys in line.

I think many church members like to see changes. Many members wonder what new thing will be announced at General Conference. It adds a little excitement. Changes are proof that there's continuing revelation.

You may be right, but I don't really see that the church is stepping away from J.S and the B of M. I think the church still really focuses on its prophets and scriptures. I think it's all about how things look. I think the church is trying to look more mainstream by adding a lot more talk of Jesus Christ to its other unique teachings. They're adopting vocabulary and recognizing typical Christi

This is the church admitting that it's losing its youth. It can tweak its seminary curriculum with more lessons and scriptures all it wants, but it won't fix the problem. The church decided a while ago that it did not want to invest in its youth. It defunded and cancelled anything fun and made everything "gospel centered." There are some kids who probably leave the church because th

Looking back, from the time I was young, I always had issues with the church. I disliked the misogyny, the idea of polygamy, the pressure to pay tithing, the way church members worship leaders, the class system in wards and so much more. I really don't think I actually liked much about the church, but I just kept it to myself. I assumed the problem was with me. The church was true and I had to fi

Oh yes, just like "buy local" and "drive safe" that I hear all the time in Utah. Whenever I hear "think celestial" I always correct it in my head to "think celestially."

I live in an area of Utah that is very highly LDS. I have not heard of bishops recommending this program or others like it, but I do know of Mormon families who have sent their children to programs like this. I'm in the middle of listening to this podcast. It's very interesting. One thing that the woman who's being interviewed mentions is that Lifeline is very expensive. Her parents paid $4000

When the mainstream Mormon church does things that blurs the line between itself and its offshoots, it only works to harm it in the end. The LDS church does not like to be mistaken for one of the groups that separated from it. It's constantly reminding people that it is not associated with one of those groups. And now it's using a name that it is similar to an offshoot group. Works for me.

When I was a teen in the eighties, my parents invited the missionaries who were serving in our ward over for dinner. They were pretty quiet while we ate and then one of them said that both he and his companion felt an evil spirit in our house and asked if they could bless it. I guess they didn't like the meal.

And Mormons wonder where people like the Daybells get their ideas. I spent many years teaching Primary and I remember a lesson about missionary work in one of the manuals for kids who were about four or five. It included the story of Ammon and cutting off the arms of robbers. Yep, extreme violence is a great missionary tool, kids.
