I found two pins in my town, and upon reading the messages, I realized that one of them was placed by me back in 2017. I had forgotten about it completely. The internet really is forever I guess…

Around 2005 I think. I still have my “You’re out of Dodge” letter tucked away somewhere. I was assisted in the process by Kathy Worthington, who graciously helped so many of us navigate the resignation process back in the day.

Knotty, your story has resonated with me over the years, as we have a similar situation to you in our family. My husband and his first wife had a very ugly and contentious breakup, and as a result he was estranged from his two then quite young children. His daughter reached out to him when she was in her 20s. She told him that her relationship with her mom had been difficult and toxic during h

My local news was just interrupted with a report that Robbie Robertson of the group The Band has died. The Last Waltz is one of my all time favourite albums, and I’ve watched the documentary movie of the same name more than once. Feeling sad! I’m going to have to dig out the album, because all I can hear in my head at the moment is “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”.

Red Rose is my go to for tea as well. I seldom drink herbal tea, as I prefer a nice black tea. I'll settle for Earl Grey as a second choice, but only if I'm out of Red rose. A bit of honey or a teaspoon of sugar and I'm good to go!

I'm a big fan of Corb Lund. I saw him perform once at the Wild Mountain Music Festival in Hinton, and he was great. The song I really like is "Brother Brigham Brother Young".

Big Valley, Alberta is home to the Creation Science Museum. Ive not visited it, although I did walk past in once while visiting Big Valley. It wasn't open... Ironically the guy that created the museum, who works as a heavy equipment operator, dug up 60 million year old fossils of 5 fish while excavating a basement in Calgary. Although he himself is a creationist, he did the right thing and con

Happy Solstice to all. It's 10:06pm and I just came inside. My husband and I sat out in our yard with a couple of scotches to toast the sun as it sank below the horizon at the latest moment that it will this year. It disappeared from view at 10:01pm, by the way. The twilight will linger at least another hour, and the sun will rise again at about 5:30am tomorrow. I love these long days of summer.

I call it the crust. And yes, I have had a PBJ recently, if by that you mean a peanut butter and jam (as opposed to jelly). Not a big jelly fan, me.

I used family search quite a few years ago. It was when they first began putting genealogical info online for people other than mormons to search. Probably hoping to hook them into the church through their research or something. I don't recall ever having to have a membership or be signed in in those days. The site didn't provide explicit info about ordinances that had been performed or anythi

That is a beautiful tribute Nightingale. I’m so sorry to hear of Tevai’s death, she truly was one of the most interesting members of our RFM family. I always found her to be sincere and thoughtful, and seemed to be genuinely kind. What a loss for us all.

Thank you for the good wishes. There's so much goodwill demonstrated when countries of the world step up to help one another. We really appreciate the help we are receiving, and you know that it will be always be reciprocated. My husband and I went out for breakfast this morning. There were 5 Australian guys at the table adjacent to us, and I figured they must be firefighters. When we were don

Our neighbouring town, 86 km (53 miles) to the east of us has just been evacuated for the second time in a month due to a wildfire. This is in Alberta, where thousands of hectares of land have been burnt and continue to burn. The last time the town was evacuated, most of the residents came to our town. This time, the threatening fire is between our towns so the community has been evacuated to

An update about our situation here. We managed to get home on Sunday, though we had to go south and then west to the north border of Banff National Park and then travel through Jasper to get home. A trip about 4 hours longer than usual for us, but it was pretty and was outside of the fire zone. Our town was jam packed with evacuees in cars, pickups and RVs - Ron's cousin among them I guess - a

This off topic post is about some anxiety and fear that I’m trying to deal with and also about gratitude. So, we’ve had a pretty dry Spring in Alberta, and the result has been a large number of grass fires in the northern parts of the province. The ground is tinder dry and strong winds have created wild fire conditions. In past week, small fires have grown into fast moving and very large f

So many Lightfoot songs I loved. Canadian Railroad Trilogy for sure, Sundown, Edmond Fitzgerald... and so many others. I think the one I love most is Song For a Winter's Night. I've spent half my life looking out of my windows at snow. It hasn't always brought me joy, especially those many mornings I shovelled the driveway before work. But it's part of my Canadian soul, and that song captures

Summer, while there probably are some private Catholic schools in Ontario, most fall under the umbrella of public education, in that they are funded by tax dollars in the same way as the public (or secular) system is. We have the same situation in Alberta. The particular school in the article is part of a "public" Catholic school district, but not "The" public system, whic

This is an interesting and unfortunately, sad topic. Like Nightingale, I was sort of oblivious to the extent of racism in Canada well into my early adulthood. I grew up in a very white suburban neighbourhood in Edmonton in the 1960s, and don't recall any neighbours or elementary school classmates who weren't white. In High School there were a small number of non white students, mostly Chinese, Pa

I’ve seen it Kentish. I think the first episode was filmed in 1964 though. I saw one or two episodes on PBS over the years, and borrowed the DVD set from my local library some years ago. I got Britbox recently and have just rewatched the whole thing. It definitely is a fascinating series. In spite of the obvious differences in the life circumstances of the various children, I saw a lot of co

Chiming in to say that everything you said, Susan, is totally on point. I absolutely love how calm Christine has been in her conversations with Kody. He doesn't know what to do with that! His narcissism, bullying and gaslighting just bounce off Christine and leave her completely outwardly unperturbed. Whatever upset she may feel inside from it all, he doesn't get to see. All he gets from her is s

Wearing poppies is still very common in Canada, from the start of November through the 11th, although in a recent news segment that I saw, it was suggested that it is becoming less common. But I’ve seen plenty this month. Some years ago in Ottawa, a tradition of leaving your poppy on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier after the conclusion of the national ceremony of remembrance sprang up. Now e

I’ll be attending the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at our local Canadian Legion Hall tomorrow. My thoughts will be on my two great uncles who both served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War 1 - Alex Morrison, who enlisted in Saskatchewan and survived, and John Thomson, who enlisted in Manitoba and was killed in battle on August 31, 1918. I’ll wear my poppy in gratitude.

For the 2011 census, the government of the day eliminated the mandatory "long form" census that was sent to 20% of the population in addition to the main census form. That year it was replaced by a vountary Household Survey which included the question about religion. Though this was sent to more households - 33% of the population, it's value to statisticians was reduced because the
