Just my two cents. Fair warning I might invoke Godwin's law, at least in spirit. I find it slightly abhorrent that we would take genetically determined differences and use them to justify actions and beliefs. Isn't this one of the justifications for slavery? That a woman can give birth or that a man might be able lift more weight shouldn't define that person as a child bearer or weight lifter.

It helps to set a moving target. That way all Freeman has to do is find the closest point to his personal opinion and connect to it.

But HB. Doesn't belief in something tend to shape a person's reality? I'm not talking about "The Secret". I'm talking about the fact that belief shapes actions. It influences behavior. Even something like belief in one's character would shape how someone would act. Doesn't the way someone acts and how their actions are influenced by their beliefs impact the reality of those around them?

I suspect that there was some sort of break in the case with her. Perhaps she thought she could pin it on the husband. However now that they are both in custody and the children are confirmed dead they will both sing like canaries to save their literal neck.

Isn't this a good thing? I get that their religion teaches racism but instead of laughing about the irony shouldn't we be applauding the effort? A little positive encouragement can go a long way. Baby steps.

My point is that the problem cannot be resolved. If one defines god as good than evil must be dismissed and cannot be a problem for god. Divine Command is as stupid as it is brilliant. My question is actually, why does it matter to me? How does god's existence or non existence impact me? Why should I care?

That's a heavy accusation there SC. Olddog is an enabler because he disagrees with you. I'm on your side as far as Mormonism is a fraud that enables abuse and indoctrinates you with garbage. It certainly did that with me. In fact in a measuring contest I would be willing to bet that I've seen and been a part of more trauma then most. And I still have brothers and sisters who are staunch Mormon

I don't want to take a good time and ruin it by trying to engage the OP. But I'm going to anyway. Hey SC. Have you ever seen a shade of grey? Hey SC. You wouldn't know nuance if it hit you in the face with an octopus. Boom! Roasted!

Perhaps a better way of saying this is that god's actions are intrinsically good because god isn't the arbiter of good but the original source of good. It isn't a matter of questioning god but instead a matter of perspective. Without knowing everything how could one judge a being who acts with all knowledge. Perhaps saving one child from dying of cancer will cause a supernova that will destroy an

In this case the word anecdotal is meant to describe a narrow narrative of a wider discussion. The fact that there are x number of people who used a gun to protect themselves and y number of people who used a gun to inflict harm on other people is lost when you bring up one example with a positive outcome. BTW using a gun for self defense happens in less than 1% of crimes that involve contact

I just wish that astronomers in the 70s didn't have such a flare for the dramatic. The Zone of Avoidance, The Great Attractor, they're such dramatic names for normal things. The Norma Cluster isn't special. The passage of time is mundane. And fancy names don't make something mysterious.

The inverse of the inverse of a positive number is a positive number. So if bread is positive, I steal it because I'm hungry, and I then eat it. My satiation is positive. There were two negatives; I stole the bread and I ate the stolen bread. It shouldn't result in a positive out come but it did.

I always thought that my mother never really liked me. She worked hard to be a mother but without the emotional connection that I expected. Turns out that I was young and inexperienced in life. She suffered tremendously, being abused by her father, being married way to early, having double digit children, being a Mormon woman, and all of the other things that get piled onto a person who for he

Why, if two wrongs don't make a right, do two negatives make a positive in mathematics? Does thought require language?

The issue is that being "good for something" requires having a definition or concept of good. Since it is established that good is not a universal constant it's kind of like saying "you be you". And wouldn't "do no harm" be a good thing? So if someone is cognizant enough to do no harm wouldn't they be doing good? I'm not actually against defining good, I just t

Oh I can promise you that my definition of good is utterly selfish. BTW, I hate the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have done unto you is bad advice. On my mission I would have wanted nothing more than having an old apostle tell me that X was bad and Y would save me. So I proceeded to tell everyone that X was bad and that Y was their only hope. The Golden Rule is the basis for the jus

I think this is an excellent illustration of why this sort of conversation is difficult. Great points clouded by emotions become non sequiturs (I think I can make that plural).

Aside from the obvious about policies that hamstrung the nation's ability to react, as well as a fragmented and capitalistic health care system which I think are real. The statement that Coronavirus spread faster in America than elsewhere is a little deceptive. Outside of Italy the US has tested more people per capita than everyone else. Yet the deaths per capita put the US at 10th, with every

Excellent point. Given the subjectivity of value based decisions, and given the inherent inconsistencies in our local to national government institutions; I'm happy to allow the less than desirable (from my perspective) exist in order to facilitate the almost necessary (from my perspective).

As long as the government follows the establishment clause, they don't favor one religion over another, than I would guess that it is technically legal. Is it wrong? I don't know, but I lean towards it being questionable but not wrong. I would cautiously wonder about the ethics of forcing a religion to change the way that they worship and then refusing to support that religion in a financial d

I'm going to wade into this a little. First you attributed the quote to Carl Sagan via good reads. I'm sure he said it but it is lacking context. I have traced it back to a US New and World Report issue on December 23rd 1991. I haven't read the article because the internet doesn't have the issue online, or at least I can find it. So lacking in context here's what I read. "But if by 'G
