Do groupies need to be pursuaded to have sex with entertainers? Thinking all women are virtuous creatures who always need to be coerced from the paths of righteousness is rather naive and just feeds sexist stereotypes. The world is crawling with horny women. And there are many many women eager to screw powerful men.

I agree with you totally -- there are many women (and men) willing to go down for the hero. I just saw the JS quote as some sort of "pillow talk" and it made me laugh. I stumbled across the quote on the blog of a current female missionary who found it so inspiring to keep herself holding fast during the times of tribulation -- translation: her mission is crap and she hasn't converted anyone.

There is always a sexual (passionate) element in religion. The Mormon women do love to swoon about their prophets. I have seen the same in Catholic women, but always their big swoon is for Jesus, so somehow the focus seems more in line with the professed faith. Easier to stay celibate with a long dead guy.

Raises the question of what basic human desires and drives draw people as converts to abusive "New Religious Movements."

Are people hoping to gain control over their family members with the new social system?

Is there some secret hunger for power achieved in the ranks of the "lay" ministry?

Is there some secret drive for sex? The hidden promise of a possible polygamous New Order that one might find oneself well "positioned" for so that one might exploit it?

A Freudian analysis, I believe, would discount most "innocent" desires for communion, community, spiritual nourishment and edification.

Maybe there is a lust for mystical knowledge, continually promised in the Mormon texts, and for magical blessings?

Case in point: the ward I am in now (sadly can't get out just yet) has a 17yo male investigator. He has (at the request of the leadership) several YW girls fellowshipping him and sitting with him in sacrament meeting. He's not that good looking of a kid, so it's not that he's fresh meat.

Now I'm not implying that in this case these girls will actually sleep with him (though that's the case in some new order religions), but that they will use physical attraction and positive attention from the opposite sex as enticements.

Do you think that is primarily (but secretly, in a repressed, unconscious way) the reason why the LDS church sends out essentially empty-headed 18 to 24 year olds as "missionaries"? Ostensibly well-scrubbed, vowed to celibacy, therefore forbidden fruit, youthful, "clean" looking missionaries?

Good point, they don't exactly use older married men anymore. There are countless stories of girls falling for Elders, giving their contact info, and then the sister missionaries show up.
