The 'why' behind service missions

Aren't they just rebranding the layoffs and cutbacks throughout the church as service opportunities for the general membership?

I'm a software engineer during the day and I found several postings on the service missionary site for 12-20 hour a week commitments for developers. That's a lot of time and money, I'd be inclined to deduct those lost wages from my tithing if I was still a TBM.

I see the change in the missionary age as sort of the same thing. Let's get them out early, right after they graduate seminary and start to really discover the truth.

Seems to me that they just milk the membership for whatever they can get.
