We have had 3 major eartquakes today and over 50 smaller ones. This is a major event. I am exhausted.

Thanks for caring. It's been terrifying. We have no idea what will happen tonight or tomorrow.

...you can keep up with what is happening in real time at...

I walked outside early after the huge one and literally saw the ground moving across the street and the glass buckle in a concrete building. This is a massive event. It's not slowing down. Just sitting here the past hour there have been at least 4 to 5 that I have felt.

Oye.

Thank you for caring. Just in the past 5 min there have been 1 per minute.

I've been through enough earthquakes to know they can be scary and dangerous. Take care.

And the first one was well over 6, right.

I hope everyone was prepared and that this settles down soon. The aftershocks sound absolutely nerve wracking.

First one was 5.8, then 6.5 and just keep going and going and going. Just right now...another one...

Hey Lori, hope things are feeling better now.

We were in Wellington visiting family Friday-Sunday and got well shaken up - but had the relieving experience of driving north Sunday evening. We were actually just setting off in the car for the last of the three big ones, and my husband thought we had blown a tyre at first. We were eight floors up in the central city, inside where the cordon went up, for the first two on Sunday. Then we spent the evening ringing friends and family and glued to the telly.

Both my DH and I were in Christchurch (separately for our respective jobs) for the first earthquake there. I think the whole country feels the dread more keenly after Christchurch.

I note Ken Ring totally missed this earthquake! Maybe this will put a stop to his moon-based predictions. Knowing him, he will do something like claim to have predicted it but didn't broadcast it for fear of spreading widespread panic like his last (failed) prediction of a big one for Christchurch. If he predicted any seismic activity in the country for several weeks either side, he is likely to claim a hit (retrospectively) as well. Watch out for him to pop up to profit off peoples' fear. (Ken Ring is a charlatan who claims to predict weather and earthquakes using the moon)

Well, I wish I could tell you we are done with the shaking. It's been a week now, and while I've had 2 good nights sleep, we shake every day. Most now are 2.5's, but we get at least a good jolt daily. It's tiring. The earth has opened up in Seddon, they are worried about a damn breaking.

I wish I had better news. I'm glad you and your family are safe.

Lori
