I just saw on the news* that the guidelines for missionary attire have changed. In some missions, young men will be allowed to wear lighter colored slacks, brighter ties and closed toed sandals. Young women are encouraged to wear bright colored dresses of appropriate length.

*Yes this was a news story on the 6:00 o'clock news. It included the reporter in a Mr Mac store with fresh faced missionaries. The reporter even changed from his light blue, still not approved shirt, to a nice white approved shirt.

I was channel surfing, so I'm not sure, but I think it was probably KSL.

Hmmm... I wonder if the change was because Mr. Mac wanted to expand their inventory.

Here is the link. I have FB news or newspapers links to everywhere I've lived for more than a year because I like to keep up on what's happening there.

If they are from BYU they are already used to wearing socks with sandals

Hey, what's wrong with that? I sometimes wear socks with sandals! ...But then I'm a bit "special." Part German too.

They probably are doing this because they became aware of the ridicule and stereotyping that the missionaries have been getting for, oh, about 40 years now for dressing so formally and uniformly. They look incongruous in many countries where dress clothes are just not commonly worn. It has probably been very off-putting in many places to have two guys in white shirts and ties show up at their door! I've heard the story several times that they have been mistaken for CIA agents.

It always takes TSCC a decade or two to get this sort of thing through their thick skulls.

The sandals must be for the Tonga mission where the missionaries wear skirts with their white shirts and ties!

You can google images of "Missionaries in Tonga" and find some nice pictures...
After all, shiny black shoes with black dress socks would look pretty funny wouldn't they?

LDS Missionary Dress Code Changes
(KUTV) More changes for LDS missionaries were announced Thursday.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is updating their dress code for missionaries. Elders will now be able to wear lighter colors, like gray suits and khaki pants, and even dress sandals.

Since this will change the way prospective missionaries shop, 2news Rod Decker spoke to stores that cater to LDS missionary dress to see the affect the changes will have on the businesses.

"Professional."

Anywhere outside Utah - professional includes various colored shirts, ties, and slacks.

It has nothing to do with the antiquated look the church forces on missionaries.

And that's just talking about the guys.

The church hasn't the first clue when it comes to "professional" attire for women.

Their rules drip with ignorant misogyny.

Many areas could not wear the conservative outfits and had to wear heavy pants, boots, shirts and sweaters and hats depending on the areas they served in like cold mountain areas.

It still depends on the mission president, so they now have a little variety but it won't be world wide, or course.

Wow, I was wrong, it was KUTV. That means KSL is probably holding that important story for the 10:00 o'clock news. I wonder if Men's Warehouse will get some free advertising?

I guess open-toed sandals would make them "an occasion for sin".

Yeah, now they won't look so cultish. The women looks so drab, almost Amish-like, and the guys looked like salesmen or wannabe CIA.

So I guess they'll be wearing fisherman sandals, then? Or mules? Do they even make those for men? And why only men?

This reminds me of Kidbotaz, who used to call a male co-worker of mine who often wore clogs "Clog Man." And now, every time I see a guy in clogs I think "clog man, yo."

So I guess the missionaries will be a bunch of junior clog men. I hope I meet one, so I can say, "Hi, Elder Clog Man." Of course it will only be funny for me. :)

Or Crocks - somehow a plastic version of clogs seems more in keeping with the church's image.

If it ain't broke, you don't try and fix it. With all the recent desperate changes, it seems clear that the numbers are not good.

It's also funny how current missionaries have the creators of South Park to thank for the change.
