The following quote would be consistent with a gay man enduring his marriage to a woman to the end.
“Soul mates' are fiction and an illusion; and while every young man and young woman will seek with all diligence and prayerfulness to find a mate with whom life can be most compatible and beautiful, yet it is certain that almost any good man and any good woman can have happiness and a successful marriage if both are willing to pay the price.”
if it currently embarrasses the Church then it never was doctrine or he was speaking as a man. That works across the board for LDS stuff. Doesn't matter if everyone thinks it's legit doctrine for decades it ceases to be once it becomes a PR liability.
That said it you go to the Church History Library and look at the Presidents of the Church exhibit(s)— a small section for each prophet with selected items from each— I noticed they had a copy of the Miracle of Forgiveness in SWK portion. Surprising considering what that book has in it. "better dead than losing yer virtue" and what not.
The book itself? The usual strange Kimball things:
・Masturbation often leads to homosexuality ・Discourage interracial marriage ・Having both spouses in the home working causes "competition rather than cooperation" ・Divorce is evil
And a few I had never heard before: ・gum chewing in public is a sign of bad upbringing and is uncultured. ・gaudy clothes and lots of make up and extreme clothing styles show weakness and insecurity. ・young married couples who postpone children until they get their degrees are after material gain and therefore are guilty of idolatry.
All I remember from the book is reading it when I was 15, and came across the quote that "masterbation is most heinous (sin) in the eyes of God..."
I remember that quote because I had to look up the word "heinous" in the dictionary because by then ...well, I had been a practicing for a long time... :/
