The latest news from my TBM nephew is that he has baptized 2 people and has no investigators!! Is this typical of today's missionaries in the Information Age!!??

he is now in Phoenix, Arizona and is living around drug dealers, druggies, gun shootings and gasp prostitutes, gun shootings and gasp prostitutes!! In other words ,a 3rd world cesspool!!

Why would the morg put their missionaries in such a dangerous situation to live!!?? Surely they are better apartments in Phoenix to house the missionaries? or are drug dealers, druggies, gasp prostitutes the people that the morg CEO's want to join as members? If he was my son, I'd would of called him back home ASAP.

I think it's part of the whole brainwashing plan. If the missionaries can survive such awful living conditions, then their testimonies are that much stronger.

I lived in a ward that was a University town.

The missionaries lived right above the busiest bar in town. They had to wade through the drunks to get to their car. The place was a real dump.

The university was right across the street. The mishey's used to sit on the roof and watch the coeds.

The only bad area here is on the west side and downtown..I still say they must be assigned to a stake, right?..so they are just in a bad area...

Has the south side of downtown and across the freeway cleaned up? Because that are was a real dive when I lived there early 80s.

I was at a conference at the hyatt downtown..all the outskirt area is bad...ghetto for sure. Makes me mad they put the missionaries in such areas..rent is so reasonable even in the nicest areas...makes no sense to put them there

They are there because the Mormon cult is very very greedy and if they get these poor guys cheap nasty apartments they get to keep more of their parents money for themselves and their shopping malls and handshake houses. They DON'T CARE about these poor boys. Not one bit. If something happens to them, LDS Inc. has a boatload of lawyers.

When you let someone else control your life, anything can happen -- and it probably won't be in your favor.

It's all about money. The very idea that TSCC actually cares about the well-being of missionaries is a fairy tale. I was one and I experienced it firsthand.

They don't care, it's about the money.

Then there is the death of the DL wonderful young man who was killed while on his mission:

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/658752/Death--Elder-Jose-Manuel-Mackintosh-Jr.html?pg=all

http://web.ksl.com/dump/news/cc/mission.htm

Five newsvans showed up for his funeral
and the family has no regrets that they lost their humerous loving child.

It was such a good photo op for the TSCC. Made my friends sick to their stomachs to see it.

Interesting. From what I understand, the poor elder that was stabbed (in the heart, IIRC) to death was transferred into the area about two weeks prior.

I had lunch not long ago with the former elder that had been replaced by the elder that was killed.

Sad story.

This is scary because I have a friend whose son is on a mission in Russia right now and her son wrote home and said they were chased by a guy wielding a knife. He also said that he wasn't supposed to say anything about it (presumably on instruction from his MP). Apparently it was a pretty close call but the missionary and his comp got away in that case. My friend's husband was shot at during his mission to the deep South in the 1980s so he probably took his son's story in stride.

Sounds like somebody didn't prime the pump...

My mission president used to use this as a lesson that if you were not tracting while teaching lessons, you could wind up dry after you baptized (or lost) your investigators.

Mishies lived in our apt building in suburban St. Paul. It was the cheapest rent around, and we'd regularly see drug deals going down there, not to mention vehicles broken into, etc. yep, all comes down to the almighty dollar!

Wow and these kids parents are ok with this?? I sure the hell wouldn't be..but I would never allow mine to go on a mission..I wasn't thinking that cult was right from the get go. Around me the ones I know of have it pretty good..they live in a nice area a completely normal apartment..drive a brand new toyota ...so at least its not all of them. I still would think the parents would be having a fit

If they are righteous mishies they don't tell their parents. My husband has told me enough stories that I would never seems my son, not even as a tbm. His mom still has no clue.

I was in Sao Paulo, Brazil and lived in some places I would not even wish on my worst enemies; roaches, rats, mold, leaking roofs, dog feces around the property, druggies, alcoholics, etc. It really has to do with the church having a budget on housing for the missionaries. When I was there we could not have a place where rent was higher than $150 a month ($300 would get a good apartment in Brazil). This would be similar to telling missionaries in Salt Lake that they could not spend more than $500 a month on rent (assuming most places go for $1000).

When were you in Sao Paolo? My sister was there from 2003-2004 - I got hints of bad living conditions (but she is far too TBM to say anything bad). Unfortunately, she got deathly ill within a few months after coming back - ended up having heart surgery, due to some as-yet unknown virus that she probably picked up while there.

Anyway, just curious. As I said, my sister doesn't talk about her mission.

I had a friend who was in Portugal on his mission and someone in the street attempted to stab him. He had books and pamphlets in his suit pocket and the knife got stuck so he was barely nicked (yes, his MP tried to turn it into a faith promoting experience, he wasn't buying it). He was told not to tell his parents about this. He told me in a letter while we were both on our missions.

I was shot at twice with two different comps, one comp & I received death threats and were attempted poisoning victims while I was on my mission. We were told not to tell anyone, especially our family, about it. We didn't. We were idiots.

We lived in the most disgusting places, frequently had little to no food and I got sick and almost died because our MP told me I didn't have enough faith and not to go to the doctor. I still have health issues from this illness that would have been easily solved had I been to a doctor when I initially got sick.

The Mormon Org does not care about the well-being of missionaries. It is all about PR and money.

The companion of the elder killed said,"WELL, THERE'S THE DARK CLOUD OF COURSE, BUT OTHER THAN THAT IT WAS REALLY GOOD, I HAD A LOT OF FUN."

WTF?
