Right now, Adele, "Set Fire to the Rain." I'm grateful for music for helping me feel. Some days I'm so tired I nearly feel numb and music penetrates that most of the time.

Even more, music was a part of helping me feel unauthorized and uncorrelated feelings when I was Mormon. Music was important in keeping me alive inside until I made it out. No wonder Boyd Packer said we should hum hymns. Can't have a deeply felt emotion not directed toward the church!

What music or songs make you cry or keep you alive and uncorrelated inside?

Wow.

I had the thought that after we fight a battle, we need people to return to who will hold us.

I think that is the name of the song. The lyric, "Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in. Are you aware the shape I'm in" recalls my young single mother in the 60s seeking refuge in Brooklyn where I attended a few years of elementary school.

I know I am totally dating myself, but one that never fails to lift my spirits is John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High." It is a song of rebirth, of hope, of youth and when I hear it, it takes me there.

Another that still resonates with me is the Eagles song "Take it Easy." I remember myself at 21, listening to that song, running from my life in Arizona and heading to California, knowing I couldn't go on as I had, not knowing what was ahead and whether I would lose or win, but knowing I had to take the chance--kind of a burn your bridges kind of song. Plus, I've driven through Winslow, Arizona, and ..., well, if you've been there, you know what I mean.

Music is such a gift.

LOL. I can just as easily date myself with those songs. My partner makes me listen to something that is not the 60s or 70s once in a while. She even has me liking some country. :-)

Yeah. When my daughter (now 25) took a "History of the 60's" class at the U of Oregon, her teacher wanted to know how she knew all this stuff about the 60's--the history, music and a lot of the movies and books. She just said "Oh, my mom was a 60's hippie--not full on, but sort of."

If you listen to her ipod playlist, she has everything from Brubeck to classical, hip hop and latin. A well-rounded kid. I did my job!

Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
But it doesn't help to know that
You're so far away...

"Please Read the Letter" by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Not just the song but the chemistry between them--shot to the heart.

I think I could fall in love with her--maybe both of them.

Forest of Flowers

Played on the bagpipes, whilst the piper walks off into the distance.

Heard it too many times as I bid farewll to fallen comrades.

Ravel's Bolero. I loved it from the first time I ever heard it. Exotic, compelling, it engulfs you and sweeps you along. The best thing about the movie "10" was that it made it popular so that it was played more often.

Andean flute music.

"La habanera" from Carmen--bewitching.

The whole musical of "West Side Story." It is full of life and love and tragedy.

There was a Spanish cook on Chopped who was criticized for putting a raw chile on a dish because it would burn out the palate of the judges. Her answer was, "Well, at least you would know you're alive." Needless to say, they booted her off. :(

That's kind of my feeling about these songs. They're alive and so am I when I hear them.

Ever since I first heard it upon its release it can still make me cry:

Alanis Morissette "Thank You"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOgpT5rEKIU

Really, the whole album (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) is amazing but this particular song hit me between the eyes when I first heard it as a woman in my 20's, still struggling to make sense of my neuroses and figure out who the hell I was after having left mormonism:

Eating disorder, near constant feelings of shame and guilt, crippling self-pity, a young marriage that had just been through a devastating crisis, fear but hope for the future...

Music has always been the best medicine for my soul, and in many ways her song was the beginning of a miracle cure: a new attitude, a growing maturity.

"Thank You" captures frailty, pain, uncertainty, acceptance, gratitude and courage all in one song. I will always love it.

Great thread, robertb.

The sound track music to the Pearl Harbor movie, not sure why lol! And pretty much anything with violin in it. What is it about the violin that makes me cry?

Instrumental. Here's the teaser: this guy is playing an instrument you've likely never seen or heard. BC, I think you'll like this.
