My surgery went well. I am home from the hospital. I'm not feeling too bad. The doctor said my calcium levels were in the low end of normal but that was expected after the surgery. He said they should improve as the swelling and inflamation goes down. The ice helped the pain.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. They mean a lot.

My DW had her thyroid removed four years ago due to cancer. That surgery went well and she recovered with no complications. Before the surgery the doctor told her that if she definitely had to have cancer of an internal organ, then thyroid cancer is the site she would choose, in terms of the best odds of making a complete recovery.

At the opposite end of the scale is the cancer that my ex-wife had -- cancer of the pancreas. The five-year survival rate is just under 4% of patients. Sure enough, she was dead within ten months of diagnosis.

So while it is "unlucky" to get any type of cancer, you lucked out by having thyroid cancer. Best wishes to you in your recovery.

I also had cancer treatment radition for six weeks which affected the thyroid still more. Might go totally on the blink but it's limping along so far. Not the same as you, but similar. Take care and be well soon.

Glad to hear from you!
I had a cough afterwards for weeks from the intubation, and now with my first cold since the op, my vocal cords are reaggravated in exactly the same way.
So annoying, but I'll take it to have "lumpy" out of there.

Best wishes for continuing good healing!

Had a right thyroid lobectomy that has been followed up with thyroid suppression. I think now they mostly fully remove the whole gland but didn't back then. Luckily I didn't need radiation etc. I meet with my specialist twice a year to check levels in my blood. All seems OK for now. As has been mentioned, as cancer goes there are far worse kinds to get.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
