The LDS church "emphasizes" and "focuses" on the importance of family, they are known throughout the world as such, but seriously , in all intents and purpose, how EXACTLY do they do this? Just saying it doesn't make it so. "We believe in the importance of family." Well duh, so does everyone. Other than family home evening, how else does the LDS church make families better? What do they teach that makes families stronger? How are they any better than other churches?

They're the only ones who will see their loved ones in the afterlife. <sarcasm>

I don't know what they mean by "see" your kids in the afterlife.

But the DO say that a man & his wives will become a god & godesses, and that they'll have their own planet(s) to populate.

So what happens to their earthly family? Assuming THEY are also gods & godesses, THEY will also have THEIR own planet(s) to populate.

That leaves a universe full of polygamous couples. No kids. No families.

Makes no sense to me.

Exactly. How come so few people seem to recognize this?

I figured that out when I was a tiny child. If my parents were sealed to their parents, who were sealed to their parents, and my children would be sealed to me and their children would be sealed to them - and the whole point of missionary and temple work was to eventually get everyone's sealings done - at some point all of humanity would be sealed together. I would spend eternity with Weird Al Yankovic, Hitler, Mother Theresa, George Foreman, just everyone. Then it's not special at all, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with family togetherness. Even if nearest and closest to me it was like an extended family reunion (shudder!)

You can still hang out with Weird Al and George on earth.

Because it's a lot like the mafia expecting total loyalty to the leaders and organization and that comes before your own family.

Made mob members swear blood oaths to the organization. I swore blood oathes to the mormon church in the temple. Yeah. I would say LDS Inc. is a famkily organization. LOL!

They have commercials about spending time with family. Other religions don't have the commercials.

They are like the pornographer that is caught and what is his profession? Executive Director of an anti-profanity non-profit.

Or the Clean Fix guy who had dirty movies in the back.

There is a compulsion for some to cover their secret sin with a public display of revulsion for same. Like the anti-gay preacher who was exposed for having young male prostitutes.

The LDS church screams about how much Christmas is about JESUS CHRIST for Christ's sake, whereas I wept my first Christmas as a Mormon because there was no Advent, no preparation for a special service, nothing. Just Joseph Smith's birthday.

The LDS church proclaims itself all about family time, whereas you and I know that they would NEVER accept a person declining a calling to spend time with family.

The LDS church offers free Bibles now, but we all know they only believe the bible "as translated correctly," which means their founder found it completely flawed enough to re-translate it (rewrite it) to suit himself. Bible-based? It's another lie covered with advertising.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Beware of the man who tells you "I'm an honest man."

So true. I had to laugh when I read that TSCC was now handing out bibles. What an overt PR stunt to try and tell people they are Christian. Yet what other 'Christian' church would be so bold/dumb to loudly proclaim in its core tenants that much of the bible is corrupted and incorrect.

At least have the balls to keep handing out the Book of Mormon.... if it as perfect as they say it is. Maybe even the Book of Abraham, since it must surely prove the divine calling of Joseph Smith....and they have the actual Egyptian manuscript in their possession. Academics and many of the world's major religions would be truly fascinated to learn more about this!!

I think this is true of Mormon standards in general. They think claiming a virtue entitles them to that virtue. They often skip the step where you have to actually live the virtue and develop a character. Saying "We believe in the importance of family" doesn't mean you actually live it. Nor does saying "We have high standards" or "We believe in being honest." They want people to take them at their word without looking at their actions and can get quite upset when you refuse to take their word for something and expect actual results.

My TBM neighbor seems to associate the word "virtue" directly with sex. Doesn't seem to comprehend there are other kinds of virtue.

Also morality is exclusively body or sex oriented, amongst mormons.

For good reason, they are often morally corrupt in so many other areas.

They claim to be a "family" church, but there's that other thread about how missionaries don't get to attend a funeral for an immediate family member, or someone's temple wedding. Then, there's also the fact that if someone isn't "temple worthy" they don't get to see a child or other family member get married. This also includes entire families of converts, as well as younger Mormon siblings.

One thing that really disappointed me as a convert was that barely anything was mentioned at all about the significance of Easter. After all, if they claim to focus on the resurrected Christ, then the anniversary of that event should be the biggest day in the church. Instead, if Easter is the same weekend as a conference, they hold conference anyway and local chapel doors are locked if they don't have a satelite dish on the roof. There's also no Lent or even Advent, as once when I mentioned Advent to my TBM ex-husband, he looked at me as if I had 2 heads.

What LDSInc. means is, they consider all the money a family can donate to them to be very important.

And they will push their way into your family as much as possible, to make sure that the money keeps coming.

The only religion that has fathers and mothers waiting outside during their children's wedding ceremonies.

The LDS church is the great destroyer of families. It has destroyed my family. It has destroyed my in-laws family. There is not a single family that I know of that has not been destroyed by the church. It pulls families apart. Take my in-laws for example, my FIL was a bishop around 27, then SP for a good 16 years and then a bishop again, and now is fixin to be an MP/tax evader. It's interesting how the good little mommy is stuck at home with 7 kids, a husband that works 12 hour days while spending every other waking min. working at church, prepping a talks, harassing everyone about paying their tithe. That would sure seem destructive to me, a family with out a father all in the name of god. It would seem that 7 children lost their dad even before they were born, being born in to a cult church where the dad is completely absent.

I'm thinking with some tbm's it's just smoke and mirrors? My husband has invited his dad over for dinner a few times but he can never make it because he's got church meetings.

His stepsister is always talking about how important family is to her. She is always spending money to mail cards and gifts for his family on holidays/birthdays, but she never makes the effort to spend any actual time with his family. They rarely see her.
Whenever she gets invited to something involving his family, she either shows up very late (and only stays for a few minutes) or doesn't show up at all. Yet she talks about all of them as if she just loves them. It's confusing.

Being a nevermo who married into a partially tbm family, I've noticed that tbm's are a lot more vocal about how much they love their families than non-tbm's. But I can't help but wonder if it's just image over substance. They say it but they don't actually live it.

From what I've seen...it's more like a smoke screen..

Mormons don't have the "patent" on family values and forever families...

If you could get thru to mormons and their clouded thinking, you could tell then to join one of a variety of religions and the "requirements" to be with their family in eternity are far less stringent

I can take my kids to the zoo, the Natural History Museum, sledding or to the pool on Sundays and we will be pretty close to the only ones there.

Thanks, Morg!
