CNN had nothing to do the other day, so it got hold of several people they imagined represented various religions and asked them for their faith-based prediction for 2011. For whatever reason (maybe he was the only one who answered the phone), they chose Card to speak from the Mormon perspective. The brethren must be thrilled.

>>7. Mormons have delivered the vote for Republicans year after year, but the GOP would be wise to remember that Mormons don't actually belong to them. We noticed and will not forget Mike Huckabee's viciously anti-Mormon mockery of Mitt Romney during the 2008 campaign. If Huckabee is the Republican nominee for president, look for substantial numbers of Mormons to defect or abstain. Mormons are the key to Republican victory in many Western swing states; if Huckabee actually wants their votes, he'd better start mending fences now.
>>–Orson Scott Card, Mormon author whose books include "Pathfinder"

And OSC seemed like he was such a thoughtful man when he was just blossoming. His Speaker For The Dead is all about a human secularist (and former mormon after its abolishment) who tromps religious authority and endeavors for liberal green environmentalism. The character even has several monologues about shattering the illusions of superstitious societies.

Most LDS would consider defecting from the Republican camp nearly as bad as defecting from the Church. Given the choice of a Christian who once bad-mouthed Mormons (Huckabee) and a liberal, they will go with Huckabee.

Unless there is a third party choice — Ron Paul or Ross Perot type — most LDS would choose what they consider the lesser of 2 evils.

Most old-line moderate Repubs would like nothing more than to be rid of those two religulous freaks and their followers.

The only reason Mormons have much pull politically is because of Orrin Hatch and Harry Reid. Reid doesn't represent mainstream Mormon politics, and Hatch may be dumped for that nutjob from Provo who used to campaign for Dukakis.

Utah has 2 senators and 6 EVs. Add in some pull in Idaho and Arizona and you still don't have much, especially since Republicans take those states for granted any way. Mormons are dwarfed in California and non-existent in the East. They make up less than 1% of the US population when counting active members.

Mormons are so socially conservative that they could never vote for a Democrat. They hate gays, they are sexist and racist, and think abortion is the biggest problem facing America. Utah is the 2nd least likely state to flip Democratic, following only Idaho, home of Ruby Ridge.

I think Orrin has shot himself in the foot once or twice too often, he is probably setting up a lobbying scam even as we type.
The mormons were more often than not democrats until Ezra Taft Benson came into power.

Isnt this the same nutcase that preaced the violent overthrow of the government?

http://www.mormontimes.com/article/10233/State-job-is-not-to-redefine-marriage

"Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn."
