What was it like? Did you freeze?

Mormon nonsense seems particularly incongruent with the values of these societies, and tithing seems nearly incompatible with their economic system (high taxes, high cost of goods and services). I can't imagine anyone ever converts...

Yep, Norway Oslo, 1977-79.

And yes, I froze my ass off. Coldest place I've ever been in my whole life. And winter tends to last around 6 months, longer if you're above the Artic Circle.

And virtually no conversions. They just weren't interested in our "message". Good for them.

My BIL served in Oslo about the same time you did. Last name is Love. Did you know him or are you him?!

There used to be more converts in those countries in the older days before 1900 and they emigated to America and Utah to be witht he Mormons there.

Thomas Monson had ancestors come from Sweden.

Old Norwegian guy I knew said "Rowing those long ships was hard work. They wouldn't go to all that trouble to drag back the ugly ones."

Denmark in the early 90's.

It was cold, but mostly rainy. I loved it there!

I also served in DK in the early '90s. Did we go on splits together?

Estonia - not quite Scandinavia but close. It was freezing, especially for sister missionaries who had to wear skirts. And 0 baptisms (fortunately).

On my mission they told us we had to teach the discussions word for word, exactly as approved by the First Presidency. The approved question to ask someone to be baptized didn't translate into Estonian very well, this is how it came across:
Will you follow the example of Christ, by being baptized from the direction of someone, who has the power of God's priesthood?
The investigator would invariably ask: What was that again?
At which point we could say: Will you be baptized?
No wonder we didn't have any success.

Demark wasn't all that cold. It reminds me of Seattle...which is 150 miles west of where I live presently. I too loved the country & the people.

I think while I was there the Danish people de-mormonized me! I have visited since & think Denmark is the best!

Skoal!
