I resigned from the church recently. I was thinking about requesting a copy of my church file. Just curious as to what's in it. Has anyone here obtained a copy of their file. What was in it and how hard was it to get?

All I've got is a sort of member sheet which gives me my member number, when I was baptized and Endowed, the names of my parents, etc.

I doubt they'd give you anything which makes personal notes about you.

When my hubby is in trouble (like not leaving the toilet seat down and I just fell in) I just shout (in my best Mrs. Mudd voice), "Harcourt! Harcourt Fenton Mudd!!!!!"

Then we start laughing and he goes into Captain Kirk, "I....don't....know....WHY...I did that. So...very.....very....sorry." (Think of all that like the Shat said it.)

Then he pretends to turn off my Mrs. Mudd button I turn off and the fight is over! See how easy!LOL

Seriously, love your name...

I did thinking headquarters would process my request, but they send this to the bishop and he only has access to two simple records.

The bishop who processed my resignation only sent me the ordinance report. Thinking back to my ward clerk days--every time "your records" are transferred to a ward two records are printed off sent from headquarters. If I remember right one was for the bishop and clerk only and the other was intended for the member who it belonged to.

Both of these records have very minimal information about which ordinances you have completed. They are identical except the one intended for bishops indicates if you have confessed to being homosexual (so that you won't be given a calling with children) and if you have disfellowshipped. That's probably about it.

No other significant information that I know of is transferred to headquarters.

This bishop does keep his own records and notes of course. As clerks we would file meeting notes that were taken during disfellowshippings and reinstatements.

If you were to ask for your records all you would get is one of these two basic records. I really don't think there is much more information on you out there unless they have identified you as a threat.

Yes - under the data laws here in the uk, we have rights to see any information held on computer about us.

I was informed in my confirmation of resignation letter that my information/file would be destroyed as per the relevant section of this act - and when I requested a copy this is what I was told.

I wonder how that works, does it just apply to data held in the UK, could they delete that data in the UK but still hold it in SLC?

Was just going to ask the same thing. If they delete it or shred it in the UK, how do you know they destroyed ALL extant copies of it anywhere in the world?

You do not know, and I suppose you'd never have the chance to see those other files or proof of their destruction, wherever they may be.

Mia: they "know" about you the same way they "know" the church is true.

Which is to say they do not really know anything, about either.

Interesting! You are so brave sneaking a peek at that file.

There isn't much to it. All of the data is maintained at the local level and then sent to Salt Lake.

There is your name, birthday, address, family members - spouse & children & dates of ordinances such as baptism, confirmation, etc. Also the date of priesthood ordinations.

If you have had formal church discipline then there will be an annotation.

You're a database entry more than a file.

Many years ago when DH was away on a business trip, I was home alone with my sleeping young child at about 9:30 pm. Just as I was about to go to bed, I heard a car, then someone pounding on my door.

Didn't have a peephole in those days and I was afraid there was an emergency, so I opened the door to a rumpled mormon priesthood guy, could have been a bishop holding a thick sheaf of papers. My eyes were better then and I could read my name at the top of the page on top.

The guy said he was there to update my church status and invite me to attend the local ward. I told him I wasn't a mormon.

He looked at me like he knew better and started reading off my parents' and siblings' names, their ordiance info, my baptismal date and even my attendance records from Laurals and such.

I adamently told him I was no longer a mormon and as I closed the door, he said something like, "Sure, ahem, I have all of your information and I know better."

I of course shuddered for a few weeks thinking about being stalked by seedy guys like him after about ten years (at that time) of non participation.

Wish I would have grabbed that bundle of papers and slammed the door, then called the police, but I was young and foolish in those days.

That would have been perfect!

By the way, notice how you have no choice in the matter as far as the Church is concerned? YOU say you're not a Mormon but he "knows better."

The mormon church foolishly assumes it *owns* anyone who was baptized as if they have no choice or freedom to leave the cult.

I have seen an entire file folder with my name on it. I was told I couldn't look at it. Even though it was a file about me.

I took a quick peek when the bish. left the room for a minute.
My entire family history was in that file. Every letter i'd ever written to any male in a position of authority in the mormon church. The notes of an excommunication hearing I didn't go to. A record of every ward i've lived in. The one thing I did see that made me laugh, was a list of people i'd supposedly been married and divorced to and from. They had me married off no less than 5 times! Their record keeping isn't all that great.

I had the impression that if they speculated about something they put it down as a record of fact. They like to think they know all about me, when they actually know nothing.

Not a chance in hell --On your records, especially if you have been excommunicated for apostacy, in the minutes of you court you will find the objective comments of the Stake President and also recommendations of higher-ups like Area or Regional Presidencies.

In my case there was a comment of a member of the Quorum of the 12 which stated ""APOSTATE DANGEROUS"" with two strike out lines right across the page in red ink..

I actually (accidentally) saw mine on someone's desk before they were sent to Church Headquarters

Sweet Jesus what a badge of honor:

"Apostate Dangerous"

Wouldn't we all like that on our "paperwork"?
