You can save that for Seattle. When you go to the coast, it's usually referred to as the beach.

If you go to a lake or a river, it's usually referred to as the lake or river Not the beach.

has lessened the difference, but here's one.

In the '90s, I lived in SoCal. "Let's hook up later" meant "Let's get together and do something later" or "Let's talk later."

I moved to NJ and told this dude, "Let's hook up later." I meant get together to study. That's not what he thought I meant.

ETA: Here the beach is where the ocean meet the sand. The inlet, although it has sand, is not the beach. The back bays are not the ocean.

Shoobies get it wrong.

And I really should have said, "I'm back on the island" rather than the shore.
