I seem to remember reading an article once where ETB denounced MLK as a communist and was also against the civil rights movement. Is this true?

Yes. Steve Benson had put a post up (I think it's in the "short stories" section of this website, someone please confirm?) about his grandfather's thoughts on Dr. King.

I know much of church leadership was against civil rights for the blacks, women or anybody else they disapproved of or found unworthy.

Here is a letter from Apostle Delbert L. Stapley to Governor George Romney of Michigan in 1964. The blatant racism and distaste for the civil rights movement is quite obvious.

Have to click on link to see letter

He's in FAVOR of a Civil Rights bill! Just so long as "the Negro" can't marry whites or enter into restricted white areas.

He reminds me of people who are in favor of equality for gays, as long as they can't marry, adopt, or serve openly in the military.

Fear of the other is greatly magnified in small groups like the morg. Every group like the morg must have an outside force to vilify.
