Survivors recall tragic car crash in France with Romney at the wheel

BERNOS-BEAULAC, France --There were six people in a car that would comfortably seat five, but otherwise it was an ordinary drive that happened to turn tragic.

On the way back from Pau, the car was hit head-on and Anderson's wife, Leola, was killed.

Anderson's driver, a 21-year-old missionary named Mitt Romney, is now a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for president of the United States, with the June 16, 1968, accident one of his rare dark moments.

The driver of the car that hit Romney, according to an account in a local newspaper at the time, was a 46-year-old man, Albert Marie, from Sireuil. Marie, according to French Mormons who responded to the accident, was a Catholic priest; in an interview this spring, a priest at the parish in Sireuil confirmed that the church's former pastor, now deceased, was Albert Marie. Many of the Mormons familiar with the accident say they believe that the priest at fault at the time of the crash but that assertion could not be confirmed. The priest was traveling with his mother, Marie-Antoinette Marie, and a 48-year-old woman, Marguerite Longué, neither of whom could be located.

They should have given Mitt a DUI test at the scene.

I get angry because it appears he has always lived by a different set of rules-in the real world OR the church. He has always been special. :/

Getting angry to Mitt because He was born into wealth?
Why do you think most of Middle East wants to erase America?

I am glad to finally see a picture of the car. It seems that there would be more damage to the car if it was a head-on impact. From the pic, it looks like the driver would of most likely suffered the most serious injuries because the impact was on that side. Whoever was in the front passenger seat hit their head on the windshield, but the windshield is still intact and the top of the car is not caved in.

I am just going to speculate that the mission president was in the passenger front seat and his wife was sitting on his lap. The passengers in the back suffered minor injuries.

I wonder if somewhere there is a picture of the other car.

Mitt really seems to have a chip on his shoulder when it comes to the French.

I think you might be right about that. I don't see how you could fit four people in that back seat.

It doesn't look very much worse than one of my cars did when I crashed it -- mine must have been at about 25-30 mph so I'm guessing that this was a relatively low speed crash, perhaps with a combined speed of 40 mph or so.

The Citroen, like my car, did what it was designed to do. The front of the car absorbed most of the impact, leaving the passenger compartment largely intact.

Many people didn't wear seatbelts back in the 60's.

The article did say 6 passengers in a car built to hold no more than 5.

And we all know how uncomfortable mormons are about sitting too close to members of the opposite sex who aren't married.
(Channeling Deanie the dreaded adult)

So,in the back was the male missionary by the door, married member male in the middle, and married adult female by the other door.

Three in the front. Mitt probably had his seatbelt on, the other two didn't.

I met Mitty (his name tag said "Mitty Romney") when he was a missionary in Paris. I knew President Anderson and his wife. I heard about the car accident that killed Sister Anderson shortly after it happened. However I didn't find out that Romney was driving until a couple of years ago.

I would assume that some brakes were applied and some swerving to avoid the collision happened so it wouldn't have been a direct head-on collision.

Those Citroens were not "compact cars" and probably had 3 in the front and 3 in the back. I would guess Leola Anderson was sitting up front in the middle and the hole in the middle of the windshield (visible in the picture of the car) was caused by her head.

Wouldn't a missionary name tag normally say "Elder Romney?"

http://www.motortrend.com/classic/roadtests/c12_0511_1960_citroen_ds/photo_01.html

Picture of front seat of 1960 Citroen DS shows a split bench seat up front that would be designed for 2, but a small woman could easily have sat there, minus seat belt.

It must have been horrifying for her husband next to her. Cars back then weren't nearly as safe. The engine would have been pushed into the passengers rather than under them like they do now.

So technically Mitt may have been a distracted driver by having a third adult in the 2 front seats.

Those split bench seats don't look too wide. The adult male in the pic takes up most all of one.

Thanks for the great link

Doesnt the word 'citroen' in French translate to 'lemon' in English?

Prolly would not have been good marketing in the US. I have also heard Mitts secret (or sacred) service code name is 'javelin' Not sure this is after the former AMC muscle car, or heart surgery/marriage counseling instructions from Brigham Young.

"Mitty Romney"? Haha! Maybe "Mitt" was just too German sounding.

I believe Mitty was trying to paint his French mission as a two year christian outreach to the poors of France - he once had to do his poo-poo in a bucket or hole - but mostly he and a bunch of the upper management lived in a big old mansion ChurchCo. was investing in (later to be sold as an embassy) with huge, lovely stained-glass windows and it's own chef.

Mostly? He enjoyed not being in Vietnam.

Well, he "really wanted" to go to Vietnam, but Heavenly Father had more important plans for him.

I certainly did not see Prince Romney there.

I get the impression he spent his mission being the mp's chauffer, gopher. Nothing more.

Here is a different version of the crash. According to this information Mitt ignored the marked lines on the road and attempted to pass another vehicle and hit a car that was in a left turn lane.

The name of the other driver who "was drunk", was not Albert Marie.

So Romney was pronounced dead at the scene and then came back to life? So he is really Mitt Zombnie?

He was Mormon Royalty afterall. His ticket was punched solely on nepotism.

One of the APs on my mission was a Huntsman. Nice enough guy, but otherwise unremarkable. The MP wanted to be a GA so bad, there's no way he would not advance him to the front of the line.

One has to wonder why the Holy Ghost didn't burn in Romney's bosom that he needed to slow down, stop, turn left or turn right to avoid smacking head on to another car.

Getting back to the cars in the accident...Romney's Citroen DS hit a Mercedes-Benz 180. The Merc is a tank, but the DS has an interesting mid-engine, front wheel drive layout which means that most of the nose is empty space. The real tragedy is that people were not wearing seatbelts.
