I have an interest in this topic, as I was married to a TBM from that line. David Dutton Yearsley was the most wealthy man in Nauvoo. His ancestors had been successful entrepreneurs in Pennsylvania. Dutton's Nauvoo house was the only three story brick house in the whole town. It even had built in closets in the bedrooms. I've see it. Of course, Smith and David became close 'friends', so much so, the TBM family story goes, that David once 'loaned' Smith $2000.00. During the upheavals in Nauvoo, Smith decided to send Dutton with a scouting party, to, supposedly, check out the terrain and report back on the best route the members should follow. It's Quite interesting that Dutton died suddenly in Winter Quarters. In researching the family stories of the event, there is not one mention of the reason for his death. I think that maybe Dutton hadn't been paid back, got disgruntled, and had to be disposed of, so as to not discredit the Holy Profit. I can never prove it, and no one would believe me anyway, but it certainly seems plausible.

When we visited the Yearsley house in 1977, it was being used to house Senior mishes. Absolutely nothing had been done to restore it. I don't know what has been done since, but the Morg keeps very quiet about this family, even though they were some of the stalwarts of the community.

Grandpa Yearsley died from the flu after he had been out for many days on a cattle buying trip for the saints. It is true that he and his family were well respected in Nauvoo. David and Joseph Smith were partners of sorts in the Red Brick Store as David ran it for a time after the Prophet was killed. David was called to stay in Winter Quaters. Murdered I don't believe so. He was buried by his wife Mary Ann using some of the material that they had put in their wagon to take to Utah. It was white and silk like. Please don't make up stories about a family that you don't know personally. The reasons that the house has never been restored is that the family has chosen not to pay to have it done. My goal has been to pull together the funds for a family trust and have it done.

Interesting how different the family versions are. You didn't know them personally, either.

The church is fixing up many buildings in Nauvoo, but won't put out a cent for the Yearsley house, despite using it for years. Strange.
