For those who had their endowments out pre-1990, are they still under the obligations they made with the whole disembowling thing since that's the version of the covenant they made? Or does the changing of the endowment apply to everyone who has previously been endowed, removing the obligation to follow those penalties?

Good thought.

Since I went through post 1990, I have the comfort of knowing that even though I've told my nevermo Girlfriend every sign, token, and name, I don't have to worry about my throat being cut from ear to ear, my stomach being ripped open or my heart being eaten by birds. I just have to worry about mocking God.

My pre-1990 parents, on the other hand, must not have the same luxury.

The pre-1990 stuff was more of a threat than an obligation. I'm sure the pre 1990ers still feel threatened by it.

Okay, so is that threat still in effect for them, or did removing it from the endowment remove it from those who'd made that agreement as well? (Do the changes work retroactively?)

I'm curious because I went after the 2005 initiatory changes had been made, yet still had the old version.

Even pre 1990 most consider it to be symbolic other than literal. I suspect that a pre-1990 feels a stronger conditioning to not say anything.

I actually got my endowments 3 weeks after the change was made. Too bad I never got to see it the old way. Missed it by that much...

Also of note:
The changes to the covenant made were VERY minimal. The big change was the penalty for not keeping them secret. So there isn't really going to be much conflict in a TBMs mind between the two.

That is what bugged me as a tbm! Was I supposed to remember: "rather than do so, i suffer, my life to be taken"? Brigham said in order to get to the CK, I had to be able to give the "signs, tokens AND PENALTIES" to pass by the angels that stand as sentinals.

Plus what about the five points of fellowship? The most magical and important fraternity secret of all?

I could never figure out why it didn't bother more people. Guess I took it all too seriously. And since you can only talk about the temple, in the temple, I even asked one of the temple workers about it...as if they would know. His answer was something along the lines of: "No dallying in the celestial room, the way to the changing rooms are through those doors."

Ah, the conundrums we got into with the one true, never-changing church.

technicaly I would say "the first one", since that was the oath that THEY made. All endowments after that are proxy and so from my perspective non-binding for the participant.

However the TBM response would be "all of them, because the 'spirit' of the covenants hasn't changed'.
