My super horny little MORmON girl friend graduated from high school. she really cut loose and ended up screwing a whole bunch of different guys, me not included. I just got to be treated AS IF if I had screwed her. yah it was a great deal for me. any way, she finally realized that she must repent. then she got possessed by Satan or some other really bad spirit that just wanted her to go back to screwing around like crazy. she had to be exorcised several times. the point is, God knows it wasn't just her that wanted to act like that and screw around like that, that isn't the way that sweet little MORmON girls really are ! and she was a sweet little MORmON girl. It was all Satan's fault!
It has a happy ending because then she went on a mission!
Traditions like Buddhism say the ego, too, is imaginary--that there is no separate "self"--but this doesn't prevent the overwhelming majority of people from believing in it and identifying AS it (even 'worshipping' it, for practically all thoughts and actions are for its survival and benefit).
Satan is the collective ego...a strange notion, if you think that humans are united in thinking they are separate from each other. And yes, according to this definition, the religious statement is true, that this world is 'ruled by Satan.'
I think Satan might be a scapegoat. People do something wrong and need to blame it on something or somebody. Satan is a great scapegoat.
Demonic possession is a great explanation for doing dumb stuff, too. Rape, murder, all that can be blamed on Satan. I didn't do it. The devil made me do it.
I agree with all your points, but the main reason Christianity made up a Devil is to explain evil in the world (the "solution" to the old saw "if God is all-good, why is there evil in the world?") In Fundamentalist Christianity, where this stuff is thought to be literal, demons tempt people into sinning, and the blowhard pastors tell their flocks that "Satan is the master of this world."
Satan was created to make permanent evil. The militaristic forces of good have to have an enemy at all times (like America). It's how we project our own sins out of us and feel comfortable.
If we acknowledged that we all have sins and are all "evil" how is the church going to continue to fund the rough stone rolling forth to cover the earth and win the War on Evil.
If we saw flawed selves in our enemy, we might be willing to forgive and be tolerant. Then where would the Forces of Righteousness Be?
Why they would just be one of us. Just another Joe trying to get by. (chorus by Jewel)
Notice the Mormons spice up old Stan in the temple by having him make "the face" in the close up where he says, "Unless you keep every oath and covenant you make in this temple this day, (zoom in close) YOU WILL BE IN MY POWER!"
Then he proceeds to tell you where to go next, leaving no doubt as to who's in charge raging in the Temple.
I think there is a direct correlation between critical thinking skills and Satan. As critical thinking goes up Satan belief goes down. When critical thinking nose-dives, Satan can be seen everywhere causing havoc.
Organized religion can control people better when people aren't questioning and thinking for themselves. Satan becomes an asset to help control the religious masses.
Organized religion and Satan are really quite good friends.
The war in heaven never made sense to me. First off, it's heaven. why are they having a war?
Second Satan lost. So the son, that God couldn't stand, got to have control over all the rest of Gods children. What parent would do something so stupid?
That would be like beating up the neighbor for trying to control your kids. You win the fight, then hand all of your kids over for the neighbor to have a shot at. Makes no sense.
I don't know of Satan exists or not. I know there is good and there is evil. The true evil i've seen is not something I want to be associated with.
I think a lot of things get labeled evil as a way for people to control each other. The lines between good and evil can get pretty blurry at times. Other times it's very obvious.
Satan is real and has a lot of aides including some powerful ones such as JS and BY. He has a bunch of stooges as well, sorta like lesser satans. Nonetheless, man is quite capable of coming up with a whole bunch of evil on his own and Satan would be surely overworked to have as much success.
It's not a very interesting question if you don't believe in god - of course there is not Satan.
However, I do find it interesting how important Satan is in Mormon indoctrination. EVERY Mormon I have ever discussed the truth of the church with in any capacity uses Satan as the primary smokescreen. They believe that anything that doesn't make the church look good is the lies of Satan.
Nope, never did really believe in Satan, even as a TBM. I think he is just a convenient scapegoat, invented to avoid taking responsibility for our less than honorable thoughts & desires.
I'm doubting Satan's existance. At this point, I'm leaning towards the theory that Satan is merely an external scapegoat for internal problems. And I thought I saw Satan once. Either him or Boyd KKK Packer's doppelganger.
I thought I met the guy a few times, but now I realize that strange things can happen when you're in that state between waking and sleeping, and that your imagination can really run away with you.
I saw a documentary recently on the history channel (I know I know it all BS on the history channel). It was about a "Haunting in Conn.", and it makes you wonder if there is some sort of Satan. When I was a lad, I saw a ghost that looked like Satan.
I don't think there is a Satan. I think there paranormal entity's that are confused, bewildered, and unhappy - but I don't think there is a devil or a God. Hows that for a response. At least the Hubble hasn't found Kolob yet.
