I saw the video of it.

So why didn't they take the guy into the locker room and give him a good thumping ? And why did they take days before they took any action ?

Jets were initially denying that he did it! he had received the "best sportsman" award for his work on and off the field!! here from an espn article!:
In 2000, as a senior at Hofstra, Alosi was presented with the Mayor's Trophy, which, according to the university's media guide, is "symbolic of good sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the field of competition."
