I seem to recall reading here that Boggs only issued a shoot-to-kill order against Mormons AFTER the mormons put out a bounty on him. Or something like that. Can someone fill me in? Who issued the order to kill Boggs, and on what date. And how much later was it that Boggs returned the favor?

Thanks!

Milburn Stone was "Doc" on the old Gunsmoke episodes...

Google up the "Battle of Crooked River" and Rigdon's "Salt Sermon," and you can find the history...

Stephen Lesueur's "The 1838 Mormon War in Missouri" is an excellent account...

Basically, the conflict began after Rigdon's inflammatory speech; neither side was innocent, and rumors were doubtless flying fast and furious...

I note a friend of mine commented that Mormons in Missouri didn't have much trouble until JS and Sidney arrived there after fleeing Kirtland, Ohio, following the "Anti-Banking Society" scandal...

The evidence is pretty conclusive that Orrin Porter Rockwell attempted to assassinate Boggs, but LDS historians naturally disagree...
