American Beauty and D Peterson

If the portrayal in the movie American Beauty has some truth to it where the avid homophobic guy is really trying to control his homosexual feelings, but in the end can’t control himself.

Any chance the Daniel Peterson was going overboard defending the church in order to keep his own doubts at at bay? And if so, might his getting dumped be the needle that breaks the camels back?
