Back in the day the church had all manual labor done by the members, including all construction and repairs that would normally require licensed people. My neighbor was one of these people who was just really handy with projects and could do anything. He was about 55 years old, very healthy and had a long career ahead of him still. He was called to help re-roof the church. He was up there with no safety equipment, and fell off. Crushed both his feet. He could barely get around with a walker after the accident, was in constant pain, and it ended his career.
The church refused to even reimburse his medical bills.
He sued the church, and after a huge court battle he won his suit. The church not only had to pay his medical bills but they had to pay him a huge settlement because of how extensive his injuries were.
The ward completely shunned him for what he did. I have never seen a group of people be so rude and nasty to someone as they were. Even the kids in the church were disrespectful.
The whole thing was just awful, and made it glaringly obvious how the church just uses and takes advantage of it's members. My mom claims his lawsuit is why the church hires contractors for jobs that require licensing now.
