I enjoy reading the articles on cougarfan about the football team. It really amazes me how many new recruits talk about how they are going on missions. Many are Samoan and not all live in Utah. Then the comments to the articles go on and on about what a great decision it is and how wonderful a mission is and how they will never regret it. Even when I was a TBM I didn't think my mission was such a great experience. I feel badly that these young men aren't going into it with a more realistic outlook.

If these guys are BYU football players, that probably means that they are getting scholarship money from the Morg to kick the pig skin around.

If they are getting money from the Morg -- and especially given how much they are in the public view -- they had BETTER talk up the mission experience!

It doesn't matter what they REALLY THINK.

What matters is that they SAY all the right things.

They need to make church leaders and PR officials happy that they were given that scholarship money to kick the pigskin around.

If they were to say what they honestly feel, they could loose their athletic scholarship.

Would the church send them on a mission that might endanger their health?

I am going on a mission too. I am actually on one right now. I was supposed to report a year ago, but the 4th of July was coming up and I didn't want to miss spending that with my family so I got a special exemption and postponed reporting to the MTC. LDS INC thinks so much of me that I dont even have to make it up on the tail end of my mission.
Well any way, Two weeks after the 4th of July was my dads birthday, I did not want to miss that, and a week after that was our family reunion. Then it was foot ball season and I didn't want to miss that! and of course that thanks giving, X mas, New years thing, and since I had so much vested in watching football you could nt expect me to leave before the super bowl. by then Basket ball season was really going strong and my brothers birthday was coming up, cant miss that! I dont want to bore you with the details but there was other important stuff that came up too, like watching the NBA finals with my family.
anyway, just think of me as being on a mission but I just havent gotten around to actually leaving yet, kind of like Jesus and that second coming thing that hasn't happened yet, but we know it will..... sometime. I am sure I will get around to leaving this next year, sometime, but I just dont want to miss the 4th of July ....and my dad's birthday after as much as I enjoyed those events last year from realizing I might have missed them. ...... Wow my mission will be over before you know it!

I used to loathe BYU athletics with every fiber of my being.

Many of the athletes in the big time sports were always sent to missions where they were able to lift weights and get even stronger on a daily basis. Then you have situations where you have 25 and 26 year old full-grown men competing against 18 and 19 year old boys (most of whom are not even close to how strong they'll be at 24-27, especially if they continue in their sport).

Then BYU pats themselves on the back when they thrash around schools with one-tenth their athletic budget (it's harder to compete when you don't get to steal 10% from Guatemalan indians and tell them their salvation depends on it and redirect that money to building palatial college sports facilities and hiring multi-million dollar coaches). It's disgraceful.

Can you tell I'm a bit bitter about this? Having played sports in a college program where we literally had to have embarrassing fundraisers just to raise enough for uniforms and transportation costs, I just find what BYU does that much more disgusting.

I understand. We rooted for U of Wyo and anyone that beat BYU.
