This is an actual quote from a good rank and file TBM. She was commenting on one of those ridiculous Jon McNaughton paintings. This shite goes way beyond CogDis and straight into scary.
Dependency. Authoritarian regimes. Lack of honesty, openness, truthfulness, information, critical thinking, free flow of ideas. When you have those things, propaganda may be necessary.
When I got into a relationship with a woman who grew up in a communist country, I was surprised at the level of propaganda that we had been fed in the USA. She watched Lassie and Mr. Ed during the height of the cold war 60’s. On Christmas, they watched American movies on TV all day, so she looked forward to Christmas. There are many more examples too.
That’s not what we were told when I was growing up about what it’s like to grow up in a communist country.
Propaganda is everywhere, and many times people love it. The fourth of July is all about propaganda, as are most things seen as patriotic. We didn’t all grow up feeling like the USA is the “Best country in the world” without propaganda. And most people like it that way. I’m astounded when people say that the USA is the “Most free country in the world”. That narrow view of what much of the rest of the world is like is crazy, but propaganda fed.
When it came to propaganda, we get just as much of it as the communist countries were giving their citizens. It just feels better when you’re getting your own lies.
What we feel on the fourth of July is no less propaganda induced than what Mormons feel during Conference.
