If they think you aren't protecting the lie, they will do everything they can to ruin your reputation. They will spin more lies about you than you can imagine. They depend on the gossips in the ward to spread the lies for them. The gossips then get the royal treatment for being so loyal.

And so it has always been. This technique was employed repeatedly by JS when people disagreed with his autocratic "revelations." He also employed it against several women who either refused to "marry" him or threatened to reveal the secret polygamy cabal. He'd actually demean them in print with such epithets as "she is a mean harlot..."
