Mitchell's defense that he was only doing what Smith did--claiming divine inspiration in taking to wife underage Elizabeth Smart, like Smith per God's command took to wife 14-year-old Helen Mar Kimball--was rejected by the jury.

Mitchell also argued that he had been a devout Mormon and was therefore innocent, since he had served as a temple worker where he played Lucifer in the secret LDS temple ceremony..
That defense was also rejected by the jury.

Mitchell was sentenced to serve time in Carthage Jail, pending rescue by the Nauvoo Legion. He has asked for a cell with a window, a request the judge has taken under advisement.
