And, how much of the income derived from growing and selling this crop directly or indirectly benefits the LDS church?

ie; tithes, tax exemptions, farm grants/subsidies, LDS held or LDS majority ownership of a barley farm, or farm corp, or of a beer supplier/distributorship, etc.

Does the average LDS member know Mormons grow barley specifically to make beer, and profit from it?

How does this square with the WOW for them? The same as with the Marriott thing, over pay per view porn in all the Marriott branded hotels? ie: it does not matter as long as 10% of the income from that activity is donated to the church?

Very curious...

It is curious indeed. My father in law was a bishop for 10 years, high council, temple worker, etc. Has donated a gazillion dollars to the church over the years in tithes.
He is a farmer and sells his crop to Pabst and Budweiser. It is the darnedest thing. The church doesn't care so long as they get their 10%.
In former times wouldn't they call this filthy lucre?

...and yet, they won't take tithing that comes from a lottery win. Curious indeed.

Have you ever REALLY known the Mormon church to turn away anyone's money? If you won a hundred million in the lottery, trust me, they'd take the 10 mil and just give you a little slap on the hand and tell you not to play the lottery again (since your chance of winning twice is pretty much nill and you should be giving them the money you're using for gambling anyway.)

in the late 1970s early 1980's some guy had a state contract to for providing mental health care in Utah county. It turns out he wholesale raped the State of Utah for Millions with padded billing accounts. This guy funded many missions & gave large donations to LDS Inc. SWK had all that could be IDed returned to the state. it was a large sum.

You asked. I hate to do anything that looks like standing up for the grand standing money gubbing blood sucking fiends of LDS INC, they cost my family plenty, but that is one example of funds being returned. most notable by how RARE it is.

He may have been advised to give it back before the church was entangled in a lawsuit to give it back. I know that before the Hatch law that allows people facing bankruptcy to continue to make charitable deductions, the bankruptcy trustee could require the church to give back tithing funds that were paid during proceedings and 3 months prior. But I still doubt the Mo church would turn away tithing paid on lottery winnings

"It is just good business, brother". In the name of Timothy, amen.

It's simple. Mormons promised to not drink alcohol as part of the commandments they live by. If they did it would be a sin. Non Mormons have not made that same promise so if they do it's not a sin.

I never knew of the malt facility at Idaho Falls, or that the fields were barley for Budwieser: when you've said Budwieser, you've said it all!

The thinking has been done!
Well, you gotta grow what sells.... pragmatic Mormons!!!

And my Idaho Bishop swore that barley was the best thing to have in stew and soup!

Also, the mormon casino workers in Las Vegas.

And the waitress in another thread who worked on Sundays and turned in a GA customer for dining out on Sunday.

Mormons hare quite flexible at compartmentalizing their thinking. They rationalize their own sins or help others commit them, but harshly judge the very sinners they enable

The WoW commands people to drink beer, so I don't see why there would be a problem

I can remember years ago in Portland, OR that a Mormon family I knew made big money in coffee vending--and most of the company employees were also Mormon.

The word of wisdom from Jeebus, that is scripture in the D&C, says that barley drinks like beer are way cool. Not only not prohibited, but something you should drink.

The only reason beer is not OK with the current church, is cause the apostate prohibitionist, Heber Grant, made barley drinks against the WOW in direct contradiction to the word of the Lord.

For this he will burn in hell.

The Church has used tithing monies to discriminate against gays and build a shopping mall. Barley probably won't cause lack of sleep anytime soon in the COB...

When I was a kid our StakePresident was raising beer barley on his dryfarm, and my dad worked for him. He also leased some of our land and grew beer barley on it, too. I remember asking my dad if it was wrong to sell grain to Coors, and he said something about people would always drink beer and the breweries would buy grain from somebody, it might as well be his boss.

I guess it's pretty easy to justify when it's your bread and butter, and truthfully, it kept bread and butter on our table. Something that wasn't always easy to come by.

Besides, when it's the StakePresident, it must be okay, right? I mean, you don't wanna lose your temple recommend for evil speaking...

We are only selling barley. It is not as if we are selling hops too. It is not our fault they make beer from the barley instead of feeding their Clydesdales.

They justify it by thinking of their own survival, ie.making money. My own DH has bought a few cases of Burbon for our "emergency food supply... good for barter! We won't drink it, but it's OK to supply it to someone else who might have what we need!

I think that selling barley to beer companies is wrong because we believe in the WoW. Even though we do not believe in drinking, we should not ecourage it either. I understand when your income relies on it, it becomes more difficult to stop selling this product. However, this is a trend that needs to stop. I was once poor and I know the hardships that people endure. I was given the opportunity to work for a friend who just happens to own a large brewery. I could have made a lot of money, but declined the offer. I felt that because I believe in the WoW, I should not work for something that encourages drinking. I do not believe that drinking is right because of the effects it has on them and others around them.
