These are some of the only verses I have memorized anymore,

Colossians 2:16
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. 18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind....

And this next one is in RED letters,

Matthew 15:10
10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. 12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. 16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? 17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

Mormons don't really care much for the Bible. And their response would be that the verses apply to Jewish kosher laws.

And besides, a living prophet can override anything in the scriptures.

Today we could apply that very same verse to the word of wisdom- is it tea which has been proven healthy, the thing that makes a man unworthy to enter the temple, or is it the evil things in his heart that do harm when they come out of his mouth.

Collosians also- As many of the new converts were Greek or other, there were many members who were also Jewish. The Jewish traditions of the saints were often in conflict with the non-jewish traditions of their fellow saints. Many places in the new testament are arguments between the Letter (tradition) of the Law, and the Spirit (inspiration) of the Law.

Again, applicable to notions of righteousness or perceptions of worthiness in the LDS belief system where appearance is often paramount.

That's one of the most brilliant arguments that I have ever heard, and it used Christ's very own words against the WoW and temple recommends. I might have to memorize one last scripture.

Good points. Whatever the response, I've found that when I try to keep the feeling upbeat and not like I'm attacking them but I'm just justifying my being able to drink (or anyone else's) etc according to the Bible - and I almost always jokingly add that I'm not saying that I believe the bible, but thats what the bible and Jesus himself said) the conversation continues and we don't end up having a confrontation.

The Jewish kosher laws come from the old testiment only. The book of Mathew and Colossians are in the new testiment, which the jews do not consider true scripture. Also, the LDS pick and choose verses from the old testiment and new testiment to enforce their own beliefs such as tithing which was originally a commandment from the old testiment, but was tossed out when the "new law" from Jesus was introduced. And now, any new law LDS come up with is considered "revelation." They could say anything these days and claim it's God telling them that this is new revelation... it sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

I'm trying to figure out good ways to bring stuff up, converse, and still stay in relationship with people. Im not a missionary, I just have a lot of them as family and friends. I know its false and ridiculous, and normally I'm pretty assertive but that's too heavy handed. It's really a trick to be able to insert things here and there nonconfrontationally

I read the Bible in a year in 2009 using iPhone's KJV app. I reached a point in the new testament where Jesus is speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well and this is when I broke down. I knew I needed to end my membership and I knew the price I had to pay to do so. In a flash it all came together at that one point after an accumulation of reading it over time I realized so much of what I learned as a member went contrary to the teachings of Christ who taught love, patience, tolerance, forgiveness and most of all grace.

That's why I encourage anyone who is questioning Mormonism to read the New Testament cover to cover.
