Grid addresses and wide streets were invented a long time before Brigham Young ever thought them up!

He added a lot to racist and polygamist philosophies.

Well, there is that whole conspiracy theory a lot of people have, about him being complacent in Joseph Smith's death.

I think you mean complicit.

when it comes down to it, I'm pretty complacent about JS's death :-)

Darn it, they need a grammar checker to go along with spell check. How are people supposed to take my masturbation jokes seriously when I am making mistakes like that?

Perhaps you should stick with 'choking the chicken', 'polishing the bishop' or 'whacking the weasel' to avoid any spelling issues or misunderstandings.

Sure, people might mistakenly think you’re actually making jokes about mastication.

I guess the fact my ancestors came to Utah and then to southern Alberta where I love to live and raise my children. Other than that.....not much...

Did you hear Steve Young was in an old daytime movie about the OJ case. He played the part of a slow moving white Bronco.

He taught us that traveling across the plains, with all our stuff in a wheelbarrow, during winter, is a really awful idea.

Brigham Young more viciously punished (raped, robbed, ruined, murdered) more ppl for believing in MORmONISM than any other person who ever lived.
Brigham young the original anti MORmON!

Interestingly, Brigham Young is the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Joseph Smith founded Mormonism per se, but the sect based in SLC has BY to thank for its foundation.

Did you read the question?

Canadianfriend, what makes you think I didn't?

He gave the world the current COJCOLDS.

You didn't say it had to be something that everyone agrees was positive!

Okay Stumbling, I see your point. But how many people think the cojcolds is a positive contribution to the world? If a few million people are members while several billion people want nothing to do with it, how positive is that?

I don't even think all the active members think its a positive thing...

Wasn't Briggy the guy who settled the Salt Lake Valley?
Without that contribution who knows when Utah would have gotten the Winter Olympics...

I went to school with one of his great-granddaughetrs, and she was totally babelicious.

OK, that's the only thing I can think of.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. So it would seem that apart from a few offspring the answer is... nothing! Just some food for thought for all the Mormons out there who want to venerate old Brigham, along with Joseph, for that matter.

Have you ever been in Salt Lake?
After that come live in a city like Houston......
Yes, BY was a tyrant but overall He did contribute to the society.

As I stated in a post up-thread, BY neither invented grid addresses nor wide streets. Nor did he invent neighborhood associations or zoning laws.

For that matter, neither did Joe Smith. That would be giving those two schmucks more credit than they deserve for stealing good ideas from their betters and predecessors.

Hey, I didn't invent civil engineering, but I like to think that my efforts in the field still make a positive contribution to humanity.

Well, I am a pee-er, but even if I went all Warren Jeffs on everyone, I would still think that my engineering projects were positive (except for the statue of myself, etc...). The street names/layouts in Utah are particularly refreshing in a country where crazy layouts are the norm. Though I will admit they're not conducive to quiet neighborhoods.

I personally think there should be more statues to civil engineers, landscape architects, urban planners, etc. But that's just me...

Had he not existed the mormon church would likely never had spread beyond the US, then my parents wouldn't have met and I wouldn't exist.

Depends on who you are asking. As far as American history is concerned, he moved a large group of people to a territory and developed it which is still thriving today. That is not true for all groups of people who moved for one reason or another. Many towns died out because the gold ran out, for instance.

For the LDS believer, he kept Mormonism going after Joseph Smith and Hyrum's death. He perpetuated the God Myth that is alive and functioning world wide, or almost.

He is responsible for thousands and thousands of people who are alive today through his progeny.

Good or bad, right or wrong, he has had a large impact on the history of UT and the US.

Learning of his life and lengthy dictatorship helped me to find my path out of Mormonism. Examples: Mountain Meadows massacre, theft, cover-ups, jury tampering and Brigham's purported non-involement. Blood atonement. Poverty and sorrow, blessings of polygamy. Making Brigham a wealthy "prophet".

Perhaps the best was saved for last. Did Young really die from appendicitus? Who knew? John Lee predicted that Young's death would come within six months of his own execution if he were found innocent in the eyes of his god. Was Lee innocent? No. Was poison a factor? Maybe. Is it too late for an autopsy?

He founded a great university (NO not that one, the one in SL).

He was a great anti-mormon. His writings have inspired many to leave.

If it wasn't for BY I would have grown up in Illinois/oklahoma instead of the Pacific North West. Thanks, brig.
