My wife and I are blown away. I don't remember how the conversation came up, but little mystic was so excited.

"science always wins dad. You pretend to be the tooth fairy don't you? You sneak in and switch the teeth out for money."

Me: "why would you think that?"

Him: "it just doesn't make sense. I've been watching about Bigfoot on the history channel and they can't find it because it doesn't exist. Same with the tooth fairy...and I think you are Santa too. I wanted to set up a motion sensor to catch you, but I didn't know how to get one. It doesn't make sense."

me: "you keep saying science wins. Why don't you think science can explain Santa?"

Him: "all of the things Santa can do don't make sense. Flying all over the world with reindeer and giving some presents to people and not many to others. None of that makes sense. The tooth fairy and Easter bunny are pretend too. Science looks at things that make sense already but it tries to figure out why. I also think my catholic school is lying to me about god."

To sum it up, I was honest with him. He was so excited that he figured it out. We talked about ethics and how science explains facts but doesn't always give answers for everything. We talked about how slavery is wrong but we don't need science to tell us that. Anyway, it was a long and good conversation. It made me want 30 years back.

He has a head start...

I nominate Raptor Jesus, or Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith is the logical choice since it is for the celebration of his birthday. At least that is how I understand the holiday after growing up as a Mormon.

And by "them" I mean children. Eating toys is dangerous.

You could choke.

Mix feelings. It is cool that he figured it out at such a young age, but it is kind of sad the magic is over.

Are you talking about when his hat ran out of magic ether to huff, or when his magic flying abilities stopped, and he crashed into the ground outside the Carthage jail?

No, but I do understand that after shouting magical Masonic words from the window, he gained the ability to fly, and actually moved through the air several feet. Sadly the direction of his travel was rather downward.

Best story I have heard yet!
Imagine where we would be if we hadn't been convinced from infancy that Fables and Metaphors were true stories.
I wish I had the brains of your kid!

Did he ask you why parents lie to kids about such things?

Did he develop that ability to think logically all by himself, or did he have coaching and help from you?

In either case, he is doing a wonderful job of figuring out things. Nobody is going to pull the wool over his eyes.

I only really started using my brain a couple of years ago. He has always been skeptical of things and a good thinker, but I have had some influence over the past couple of years I think :)

That's great, LM. And your son wanted to set up a motion sensor to catch you as the Magical Claus? At 7 years old. Wow.
