Your tithing dollars at work ladies and gentlemen. The comment about the free rent is about half way down the article.

Can you imagine how much good that money would do at a food bank or a homeless shelter?

Or how about helping people pay rent who are struggling with jobs, family and keeping their home?

Nope, they're going to give Apple a handout. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves. Including Apple.

I hope this is being well publicized on the Mormon boards.

Any chatter you know of?

Do they care?

Ana

That's a good one. The rent has to be subsidized by funds from somewhere. And for five years. The only thing the Mormon church can cut faster than a check is scruples.

I think we should just all complain to Apple. It won't change their minds but it might clue them in to the climate there and maybe keep the Gateway store open.

Yeah, right, I am really grinning at myself, now!

But sadly that's the very last thing TSCC would do...

'Free Rent' is SICKENING (except ala Romney 'Corporations are people).

If true, this is an Outright Bribe (we'll NEVER know for sure)

Question: Are they taking a vacant space? How many other vacant spaces are there?

You don't offer free rent if you've got a hot property that's in big demand. You offer free rent to manipulate the market.

Free rent is a form of "predatory pricing". You run your competition out of the market, then when you are the big guy in town, you price as you please. The idea is that you can outlast the other guy when your financial resources are deeper than his. The Mormon church has a bottomless tithing well to draw from.

Talk to the old merchants in holladay Utah when ZCMI (at the former Cottonwood Mall) moved in on their business. I know a man who lost his store thanks to the LDS church -- and he was a good Mormon.

Thanks CA Girl for sharing this. I love RfM because I do get my mormon news here first. =)

If Taubman is bribing a business with 5 years of free rent, this tells me that maybe they are not starting as strong as they were expecting to. Now, who picks up the tab for the rent, is it Taubman? Is it the Church? I know at the end all this is, as someone well put it, built and operated on the backs of each believing tithe payer.

Now, should members get a 5 year free-tithing deal? That would really do many families some good.

...why the Jesus Mall would cost more to build than the Burj Khalifa? I'm reading an article on science blogs where the author supposes that the $1.5 billion cost to build the Burj would have been substantially higher in the U.S. due to higher labor costs. Perhaps all that plentiful petroleum in the UAE brought down fuel costs?

Do they make all the stores give 10% as a "tithe?"

Also, do you think this will lead to City Creek being open on Sundays? I can't imagine Apple being willing to close down on Sundays. They have a store in the Gateway that is open Sunday but those two malls are so close together, I can't see both staying open. Apple isn't getting as great a deal if they have to give up four of their busiest shopping days each month.

Plus, won't that just encourage those wretched intellectuals and feminists to shop at City Creek if there is an Apple store there? And those tattooed weirdos might come in looking for something to play their sinful Satan worshiping music on. Seriously, has the church thought this through?
