That is, high profile while a TBM.

Steve Benson for sure.

Who else?

To leave voluntarily?
Some early guys like William Law, who was in JS's first presidency come to mind. Since then I can't think of any, but if they lost faith they might hide it and just go emeritus.

EXed?
Richard Roswell Lyman (November 23, 1870 – December 31, 1963) was an apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1918 to 1943. He was excommunicated in 1943 for unlawful cohabitation, a result of a polygamous relationship.

Tal Bachman. Richard Dutcher. Chesney, the OK temple pres guy. Come to think of it, it's kind of amazing how few there really are. I think it would be hard for people with an established public persona to make the switch. More so if the church is your livelihood.

Wow, I didn't realize Dutcher had left. A friend and I got to see a press screening of Brigham City in San Francisco because we were helping to get it shown in theaters in Modesto. We got a couple of framed film frames from God's Army as a reward as well, IIRC.

God's Army resonated with me at the time, because the main character's prayer and perceived answer at one point were close to the "answer" I got that made me get baptized.

Of course, I got that same emotional response from any other good movie or TV show. The Holy Spirit must really like Breaking Bad, too! *rolls eyes*

Sorry, getting off topic.

So does that mean tbms must destroy their copy of Gods Army? I found his films had a honesty lacking in "Mormon art". Anyway according to the wikipedia entry on him lack of depth in Mormon cinema led to his exit. Sorry for the ot comment but Gods Army is a found memory from a byegone past.

No, he left because he could no longer accept the church's truth claims.

Dutcher was interviewed by John Dehlin on Mormon Stories podcast, and gave a moving description of the moment he stopped believing. He said that during a period of doubt he was praying intensely, and asked God if the church was true. Then he heard his own voice from within say clearly, "Of course it isn't true."

Ditto this one.

By the way, the quote, "They never denied the faith" is BS. They did. Martin Harris changed religions like a woman buys shoes. Whitmer swore to all the saints in IL that if they believe in his testimony of JS then they would believe him then that JS ain't right, as he was booted from the city (paraphrasing my words). Cowdry, he joined other churches as well as spoke against the church while running for office a couple of times. He and Harris only came back to the church cuz they were willing to care for them when they were totally S.O.L.

So the next time u hear that quote, say "on the contrary my brainwashed morg zombie".

Romney after he wins reelection. I don't think he wants to retire from the White House to become an apostle, where he would have to fork over his entire fortune to be divided among the other apostles, his children's inheritance be d---ed.

And the cast of characters here - Steve Benson, Simon Southerton.

I always hate the question though, because "high profile" exmormons, however that is defined, doesn't make Mormonism false anymore than high profile Mormons makes it true. It is the theology, the history, and the sociology that makes it a crock.

I must admit that Chelsey Handler having once been associated with Mormonism makes me smile.

No, it doesn't make it false, but it's nice to know.

The last time I saw my mom (to go to a baseball game) she had to point out all of the baseball players who were mormon. Like it makes the church true or something?? I didn't really say anything but a friend who was there could tell I was getting frustrated and changed the subject.

Alice Cooper? Really?

Knock on any door on any street in any town USA. Ask the resident to identify these names. With the exception of Papa Bachman and Cooper (?) you'll likely get a blank stare.

The cult doesn't produce high-profile characters mainly due to its ideology. Mormons focus on cult, not career.

High-profile is a relative term. Paul McCartney, for example, is high-profile when compared to the musicians on this list.

Aaron Eckhart went on a mission and everything.

Will Swensen, who also went on a misson, and went from being the voice of Jesus on the IMax film at temple square to singing nude in Hair. When he left the church, I think the church scrapped its hugely expensive movie just because his name was on the credits.

Amy Adams, who was raised Mormon (born at the US base Caserma Edlerle in Vicenza, Italy) until her parents divorced when she was 11.

Is anyone here close enough to Carol Lynn Pearson to know if she is headed out of the church or not?

The unique niche she carved out for herself seems to suit her just fine, but it also means she has to stay exactly where she is permanently or take economic risks she probably would not be inclined to take at this point in her life.

Mormonism is its own world since it is, after all, am American subculture.

A high-profile person in Moworld might be unknown elsewhere.

How many of you know who Daryl V. Hoole is/was?

She was my idol, an icon of Mormon homemaking, a Super Mom extroardinaire and is completely unknown outside of Mormonism, as far as I know.

http://www.theartofhomemaking.com/

For her to leave the church would affect me more than if Donnie or Marie left.

I'd be interested to know if any of your personal heroes left the church, causing you to question.

Tanya Tucker lived in St. George during her teen years...Does anyone know if she ever was dunked????? She is not LDS now but she does have Utah roots?

Jewel claims she was baptized as a child when she lived in Spanish Fork. She claims she is not now Mormon and claims Alaska as her home state.

The Shedaisy sisters also were born and raised in West Valley. They were Mormon but there is no evidence now that they still are..Anyone know for sure?

Went to school with Kassidy (SheDaisy) - she was married in the San Diego temple. Rumor had it that her romance with the guy in Rascal Flatts ended because he wasn't Mormon. As far as I know they're all still active.

Katherine Heigl used to be in my ward growing up. She was in my sunday school class. I know she was baptized and attended church until her career took off. Then she became a jack mormon. She says in an interview that she still considers herself a quasi-Mormon whatever that means.

There was a former premier of Germany who was baptized a Mormon recently. Actually, he loved the church so much, he got baptized several times. Of course, he never actually bothers to show up and attend, so I guess you could say he is technically out. What was his name? Oh yeah, Hitler.

Author of NO MAN KNOWS MY HISTORY. Not sure if she was ever "active TBM" - but as Dave McKay's niece, she was pretty "high profile."

If she hadn't left, I might still be TBM.
