Having been in Utard (and especially in Utard County) to see my daughter get her Masters degree from YBU, I notice a lot MORE of "more of the same" ... I mean, come on, is it really necessary to have a McDonald's or an In-n-Out within two minute drive of EVERY home on the Wasatch Front?

Anyway ... to the point of this thread. During the graduation ceremony the master of ceremonies (don't even know who he was) saw fit to add a little encouragement (salesmanship) to make generous donations to BYU, because ... because ... all the new stuff they will be adding to the campus, like the new engineering building, etc. etc. will ONLY be funded by alumni/private donations, and then he added a very interesting comment (one tainted with a bit of spite - imo), he stated: "... because the First Presidency has informed us that there will be no funding coming from the Church"

The way he said it ... oooo boy, I could almost hear the exmormon in him shine through. It was a real testimony breaking moment, let me tell you !!!

Praise Jebus.

... it dates back to my missionary days (Oakland CA) and I wasn't "Elder XXX" to most the missionaries I was "the Weeder" or simpler: "the Weed" ... the Mission President and especially his wife encouraged me to continue publishing a very little newspaper in the mission called "The Weekly Weeder". The mission president's wife liked my impression of Bruce R. McConkie too (and I only quoted his most controversial stuff too).

I know that didn't tell you too much about the name "weeder" ... maybe later.

Oakland, Ca just happens to be the birthplace of Medical Marijuana and thought it happened to be about that.

Just a thought

... its really too bad that that WASN'T the reason, it would have been a lot more interesting for all those involved.

I forgot to mention my paper the "Weekly Weeder" later turned into the "Weeder's Digest" as I just couldn't keep up the pace of a weekly paper ... what with all that busy work that missionaries do (prayers, study time, and zone leader reports, etc. etc.)

That's surprising... YBU has always recieved generous funding from TSCC. I wonder what else has been cut?

... so the ceremony was in the Field House (afternoon session). I'd love to know if there were transcipts, but I doubt it. They probably would already have been edited by some set of senior missionaries for ONLY uplifting material -- and that guy's comments certainly were not uplifting to a TBM.

I wrote my last tithing check about eight months ago.

I paid - well, let's just say my husband and I wrote some "bountiful" tithing checks.

And I know I'm not the only one.

If TSCC has money enough to build 5 billion dollar Great and Spacious Malls, then they do NOT need my family's money.

Now we have money to donate to our LOCAL food bank, to a LOCAL nursing home, to the LOCAL elementary school and the LOCAL high school, and to the LOCAL Salvation Army housing program.

The LDS scriptures say "When you do it unto the least of these, thy brethren, ye do it unto me."

and

"When you are in the service of your fellow beings, you are in the service of your God."

I believe those scriptures.

So now I serve REAL charities, instead of fake charities where the donated money goes to building luxurious malls. (Yeah, "they don't use tithing money to build malls." Yeah, right. You want me to actually believe that? OPEN UP YOUR FINANCIAL BOOKS FOR A TRULY INDEPENDENT AUDIT !!! Let outsiders see the books!)

Sorry, I forgot to get back to the point of the post I wrote above.

I'm no longer sending TSCC money.

And I KNOW I'm not the only one who decided if they were going to build malls with the money, that we would not give them anymore.

There are others who looked at that 5 billion dollar expense, and decided not to write any more checks.

I think that TSCC is going to soon find out just how expensive that mall REALLY is.

And if enough of us quit paying tithing because of that stupid mall, then yes -- that's going to cut into BYU's budget Big Time.
