Some years ago a personal friend was killed in a car accident. His wife was driving, he had just unbuckled and turned around on his knees on the seat to tend to one of his children in the back when a deer stepped out onto the road. Rather than hit the deer his dear wife made a hard right off the road into a dirt bank. The almost instant stop as they hit put him through the wind shield backwards which broke his neck.

Important safety tip- in most cases just go a head and hit the deer.

After his death the wife hit the church speaking circuit traveling from ward to ward and then from stake conference to conference with the faith promoting story about how her dearly departed had appeared to her in a dream declaring she should not blame herself and it was his time to go, because he had importante missionario work to do in the next life. He had supposedly told her that she would find a temporary husband who would be able to provide for her ( and the six children) until they would all meet in the after life. Her story (and the fact that she was young and attractive) touched the heart of numerous wealthy men ( and many who wished they were single) one of which married her for time.

This has bugged me for years. Her talk should have been written to read-“ Dear Brethren, especially wealthy single Preisthood holders, my poor driving decision, killed my husband and I am using the church to market myself to the highest sugar daddy. And I can do it all by simply promoting the heaven planned, untimely death of my husband, validated of course by a most convenient dream. Let the bidding begin.

Am I being too harsh? Anyone else seen a pretty face turn the brethrens’ heads?

Perhaps the best, or only, good use for religion is to get people over the rough patches in their lives.

In this case, it would seem mormonism utterly failed this poor woman. I can't imagine the grief and guilt, six grieving kids, possible financial ruin, possibly few job prospects, and then the (dis)illusion, and the speaking circuit. A pretty face, a wealthy second husband, and the praise for sharing this sad story would not be terribly comforting.

I wouldn't call you harsh, it is your perspective. But I would suggest you make an effort to offer compassion and non-judgment. She has enough pain.

Where's the picture? If it's good enough then it'll surely be inspiring to some men on RfM who were blessed with a strong strain of a seed-spreading-desire genetic mutation.

I'm not sure your tip about hitting the deer is all that great. My dad hit a deer and almost totaled his Volvo. And those are tough cars. I think the guy's number was up either way.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't. I knew a guy who could not swerve to miss it so he went ahead and hit the deer- the deer came through the windshield... and impaled him with one of its antlers.

I've hit deer twice; both times I've been lucky enough that all I got was a hell of a sore neck and a headache.

Oh, and by the way, those things you put on your bumper to keep deer away do NOT work.

As for the rest... I don't know.

It doesn't matter how pretty her face is, to accept 6 kids that aren't yours, says something about the guy. Not many guys would even consider it.

Did she have big bosoms? If so, no harm no foul.

I'm sure that's what some want to hear. ;)

Just sayin'...

Given what I saw on the singles circuit (circus), this story doesn't surprise me. Although we'll never know for sure in this particular case if the story had any shred of truth to it, there were lots of people in the singles' shark pool who had created "faith-promoting" narratives about themselves., and there was no shortage of individuals marketing themselves to the opposite sex, either.

Of course, we have no way to know if the rich husband turned out to be a good thing or not. It's entirely possible that such shameless self-promotion ended badly -- given the quality of men out there, that wouldn't be surprising, either.
