No one should be surprised by this info, but here's an interesting statement: "Education does pay," Langston said. "Women in Utah may think that they won’t have to work, but they do — AND AT A HIGHER PERCENTAGE THAN WOMEN NATIONALLY. There needs to be more emphasis on women understanding that they need to go to college and graduate. But there must be a big cultural change for this to happen."

Why do you suppose the percentage of women working in Utah is higher? To support large families? Pay for missions and college? Pay tithing? Catch up on retirement? What do you think?

This study just found Utah as 2nd Worst, just behind sister state Louisiana.

Cashiers make less than engineers. Wow I didn't know that.

The study accounted for educational disparity, but still found this:

"The wage gap exists regardless of education level » Despite women’s increasing presence in higher education, advanced training does not reduce the wage gap. Women with professional degrees are paid 67 cents for every dollar paid to men with professional degrees. Furthermore, women with doctoral degrees are paid less than men with master’s degrees, and women with master’s degrees are paid less than men with bachelor’s degrees."

Someone with a master's degree in engineering makes more than someone with a master's degree in sociology.

This is obviously sexist.

We need the government to move most of our engineering jobs overseas so that this disparity is corrected.

A couple of years ago, when I was deciding whether or not to go back to school, I learned from the DWS website that 60% of Utah jobs pay less than $16/hr. Housing, however, is near the national average. Add a few kids and that 10% for tithing, and it's a recipe for chronic income shortfall, which usually means the woman has to work at least one job just to keep the roof overhead. I was working three of them while DH's business failed. Ergo, continued education for better income.

just like teen suicide and women's depression don't either.

Where I work, if you are stupid enough to volunteer to unload hazardous materials from trucks; you are paid more than people who have the brains to stay away from such substances.

I volunteer to work overtime so I can hide from my kids.

I suspect there is the attitude that if the woman is married, she doesn't need to earn has much as a man, or she'll be pregnant soon and will stay at home. Besides, how is a woman suppose to have a career when the church wants them married by 19 and pregnant by 20?
