I usually go to sacrament meeting with my wife because she doesn't like to go alone. It's not that bad, and I enjoy sitting and holding hands.

Today was a missionary homecoming, so the place was packed, overflowing well into the gym. The first speaker talked about how every member needs to be a missionary, both by example and by actively sharing the gospel. He said one of the things that always bothers me: "People know who we are, and everyone is watching us to see if we uphold our standards."

This, of course, is complete BS, as no one cares what we are doing, and if they do, it's because they think Mormons are a little weird.

The missionary spoke about how he went into "ghetto" areas with little success but came home humbled and more committed than ever to the church. I think that's one of the main reasons for missions: to cement the loyalty of the missionaries.

I had a moment of clarity, and I felt awful being in there. I knew I shouldn't be there, not because I care what others think, but it felt incredibly hypocritical to be sitting there and knowing how I feel about Mormonism. So, I left.

I wonder if anyone, upon returning from their mission, when asked to give their homecoming speech, told the bishop to stuff it....or better yet, got up before the sheep and dumped all over the whole thing...I'd pay to watch that!

I don't blame you for walking out. I attended SM today only but used the time to help a father with his three kids aged four and under (the wife was out of town). I actually had a good time from it and was glad I could help someone.

"People know who we are, and everyone is watching us to see if we uphold our standards."

(Ooooh...I can guarantee that's not an original thought -- he's just parroting what's been drummed into his head by the morg).

You got that right runtu. That's the difference between Mormon illusion and non-mormon reality. They really live in a little world of fantasy, don't they?

Mormonism likes to think it is the center of the Universe. Remember all the talks about how a Mormon was in a situation where he was sorely tempted to break the word of wisdom (offered coffee in a job interview etc.) only to find that all the non-Mormons around were watching to see if the Mormon had the "integrity of his beliefs."

As if the world gave a horse's patootie.

Now, however, that Mitt has brought the Mormons the tiniest amount of attention they recoil and bemoan the "persecution."

When one's fantasy world and the real world collide it is seldom pretty.

"People know who we are, and everyone is watching us to see if we uphold our standards."

You know who watches Mormons the most? Other Mormons!!. Heaven forbid some ward member is seen with coffee, shopping on a Sunday, or *gasp* NOT wearing their garments ("I saw her with that white blouse, and I know she didn't have her garments on.").

The rest of the world laughs at things the Mormons take so seriously.
