Hello again,

I just read something on Mormons not drinking Coffee or Tea, but Soda is fine. Um, is this true? Research has shown for a while now tea is good for you and now so is coffee, but Soda is terrible for you. It's the saying one thing that science now shows is fine and in many cases good for you while something like Soda which may be tasty, is quite bad for you.

True. Although I know there are some extreme Word of Wisdomers who vow off soda, too.

Wow! Are you serious?! Something science says is perfectly fine they say is forbidden? And yet Soda is fine?
Let me ask this, how much ownership does the LDS church have in companies Like Coca Cola?

Yes. However, some will only drink soda that does not have caffeine in it. My in-laws do not drink soda with caffeine but my FIL is a chocolate lover...dark chocolate too! Makes no sense, but whatever.

Not all of them avoid caffeine! My in laws suck down caffeinated sodas and even energy drinks, multiple per day. They are hopelessly addicted to caffeine (not to mention obese) but dare to hassle their adult offspring when they have a beer!! Drives me up the wall

A dead prophet specifically said that God commanded us not to drink tea or coffee, and was so insistent about it that he made it a question on the temple interview. If you drink tea or coffee you won't pass the interview, and thus will not be exalted in the kingdom of heaven, neither will you be with your family for eternity.

No prophet has taken this worthiness question out of the interview, and no prophet has ever said anything bad about soda. It doesn't matter what science says - it only matters what the prophet says (and even if he's wrong, you still have to get past that damn interview if you want an eternal family!)

I've know quite a few mormons that drink anything they want. They just don't admit it to other mormons.

Heh heh. Always invite 2 mormons with you if you're going fishing. If you only invite one, he'll drink all your beer while you're not looking.

My brother was on a rant a couple years ago about corn syrup as a sweetener, so that left out almost all soda. I soon learned that The Ensign had an article about corn syrup that month, so he was not doing his own researh.

Oh, wait, he's a TBM, reading The Ensign IS research...

I am just floored at this. Modern Science says something is fine and a religion makes no effort to adapt for the good of its membership? This is just astounding to me.
How do you ever get converts? By the gods there is no way you could ever ever get someone like me to convert! How does your church ever get educated non christian men to convert?

As to prohibitions against coffee, tea and alcohol, church leaders have flat-out stated it has nothing to do with the substances themselves. It's about obedience to authority. And Mormon authority says coffee, tea and alcohol are off limits.

But like I said, they have very few converts who remain. Most drop out within a couple of years.

Get them to believe using other methods, and then get them to think of things like the prohibition against coffee and tea to merely be tests of faith.

Alternately you could convince them that God is smarter than man, and that science has yet to catch up.

Yes. The word of wisdom is the Lord's code of health. That means coffee in the morning with toast, Green tea in the afternoon with a turkey sandwhich, and red wine for dinner with salmon is very, very bad. Extremely unhealthy. All those toxins will kill you. Hot Chocolate in the morning to wash down the Krispey Kreme donuts, 44 Ounce Big Gulp of Mountain Dew in the afternoon to wash down the Big Mac, and 44 ounce Big Gulp of Mountain Dew for dinner to wash down the Spaghetti and Meat Balls is healthy and good for you.

Hate to sound like I am beating a dead horse, but I am just reading all this and it just makes no sense to me at all.
That post about eating a big mac and a 44 ounce Big Gulp, wow...
Sorry, I am a health nut so that just makes me cringe.....
Let me guess, they also have no qualms with their members feeding their children fast food with the pink slime filler? How could any religion be so calous towards their membership?
I will ask this again, how in the name of the gods does the LDS church get educated men to convert? I can understand women, no offence, but many branches of christianity lure poor women in with promises of helping the children, but a self-sustaining, educated free man, how?!?!

Educated men or women rarely convert any more. Most converts any more are less-educated and emotionally vulnerable. Most educated men either converted a long time ago or were born LDS.

The prophets thought highly of coffee-tea ban back when that was more commonly accepted by the world. These days the prophets are too scared to come up with anything new. Soda has become popular during this time, and so has not received such attention from more recent prophets. However, they have identified themselves so strongly as being coffee-less and tea-less for so long that it is a part of their identity that they can not remove. They actually take pride in it, believe it or not.

Seriously I shared some studies with my TBM dad on findings that green coffee extract can help control blood sugar. He is interested in buying some capsuls for mom to see if they help her. He said it's OK to use coffee or drugs medicinally just not unless warranted. Suprised me.

What you must understand is that the Word of Wisdom is not about health.

It's about unquestioning obedience to the dictates of current leaders.

It doesn't matter that healthy things are disallowed and unhealthy things are allowed.

It doesn't matter that past leaders have taught something different.

It doesn't matter that it has not been enforced or has been selectively enforced in the past.

It ONLY matters that you OBEY.

It ONLY matters that, if the dictate changes, you adjust accordingly and OBEY.

The word of wisdom has two sides to it. On one hand it is a test to see if you will strictly avoid using the official list of items which proves your willingness to obey a law of god. On the other hand it is considered a health code that is not restricted to those things on the official list. They are taught not to take anything into their bodies that would defile their temple. Many are not so good at following the latter.

I am going to detract a little if that is alright with everyone. How do you get people to convert with draconian measures such as this?
If someone ordered me to give up coffee after I finished laughing at them I would say no.
Really, how does the LDS church get converts with measures like this in place? Or is it something along the lines of some man meets a pretty girl, he plays along for a while then just leaves when it becomes too much?

You would be demonstrating that you are not humble. This lack of humility to accept God's teachings would likely make it so that you don't receive a testimony, or a sure witness from the spirit, anyway. God only gives this sure knowledge to those who are humble, meek, submissive, and other child-like attributes.

Hmm, well that would be absolutly of no use to someone like me.
I posted here once and I am not a Christian, I am a heathen. I am of the Germanic/Nordic variety so for us while humblness is good, cowering in fear of an angry god is not. Our gods expect us to be upright, honorable, and wise men who face all of our task in life with courage and honor for we not only represent us, we represent our folk and ancestors. The last thing our gods would want us is to be child-like and weak, we are of no use to the world nor folk as weaklings and we do our allfather a terrible disservice by shaming ourselves infront of others.
Sorry if that was long winded, wanted to give you an idea of where I am coming from. We have a different take on humility.

Grey Wolf, your take makes much more sense. Mormons are sold the idea that being a humble, childlike individual is somehow the most righteous path in life. Have you ever heard a Utah Mormon woman talk? There are exceptions but many of those women speak in a very childlike, little girl voice that you don't hear in grown women who are not porn stars. This is supposed to make them look more gentle and humble. You'll hear a lot of men speaking in this girlish voice too for the same reason. They think being a child who doesn't ask questions and follows orders is the most righteous path in life.

Yet Mormons think God sent us here to grow to be like him. Growing entails growing up, thinking, being strong. The God of the Universe doesn't behave like a toddler but apparently, he wants his followers to be less and less of a person each year, not more and more.

My TBM grandmother goes to McDonalds every day and gets her diet coke. In the old days of South Jordan Utah, when it was rural, she used to walk down to the Maverik and get her huge mug every day but Sunday (and sent ME that day, as I have always pretty much been destined to ride the ol' handbasket down to hell).

Science says that a virgin can't have a baby, yet religious people believe in that crazy stuff.

Haven't you ever met a religious person? :)

Hmm yes I have met more than my share of religious Christians and the whole virgin birth thing. Even the gods like to take an active role in the creating of their children.
I am more of a man of action, not so much of religion, but just for giggles heres me being religious.
Christ promised the end of all sinners or something along those lines right?
Meanwhile, Thor, Odin's mighty son promised to get rid of the jotunn (Giants)
Well, don't see many giants around nowadays do you? Praise Thor!

Whenever I have been asked about the hammer I wear if I use popular media I use something with a bit more class (The Thor Movie) but o well...

Seen the one where it says my god has a hammer, your god was nailed to a cross?
