someone mentioned a couple of weeks ago a letter that his/her ward received regarding Easter. I understood that bishops were encourageto talk about the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So after a few weeks of absense I went to check out my ward's Sacrament Meeting.

My ward didn't get the memo. It was RS day. The RS presidency spoke. Speaker 1, history of RS, I found it a bit boring. Speaker 2, Charity, she said "charity is doing our visits, even when the person does not want to receive us or is not happy to receive us", I thought of all of you RfMers. Speaker 3, it's great to be in RS, she rejoices every time she hears a new baby girl is born because she will be another member of RS. And we did sing "Christ is Risen" as the closing hymn. But the intermediate hymn was "As Sisters in Zion".

Now that my eyes have been opened I see how out of touch with the world the mormon mentality is.

2 speakers at Church for Easter Sunday. First guy...member of Bishopric talked about obedience (big surprise) and the second speaker talked about ancient temple worship amongst the Children of Israel and tied it to Jesus a little. I guess he got around to an Easter idea or two kind of at he end. No real talk about the crucifixion of the last week of Jesus' life, Gethsemane etc.

Seriously. LDS wonder why people think they're not Xtian...?? Doctrine aside— and there's plenty of differences between LDS and others— it is that LDS don't talk about Jesus as much or in the same way that others due. One of the two biggest days of the year for Christianity and many LDS can't seem to fit Jesus in.

Whatever. Not my concern anymore I guess.

Hmmmm, "History of Relief Society" - did she mention that Bigot Young shut down the RS for, what, 40 years?

Of course not, neither did they mention that Emma's agenda included denouncing polygamy.

All the hype now is about the new RS book "Daughters in my Kingdom".

Sometimes I attend church thinking how it seems like a completely different church of what the real history shows us.

What? I've missed this tidbit (about BY shutting down RS). Can you give me a reference?

This thread reminds me of a light bulb moment that aided in my departure from Mormonism. When I posed the question in Gospel Doctrine class as to why other churches talked more about Christ than we did as Mormons one person answered: "Other churches talk about Jesus a lot because that's all they've got." Then he proceeded to list all the important things of Mormonism.

THAT's ALL THEY GOT???? How absurd is that? Christ is the most important thing in Christianity and we should not concentrate on HIM? Mormons are freakin'stupid.

Wow. Like LDS church programs and organizations are as important as Jesus Christ in a Christian church. How absurd.

When one starts listing all the church talk themes and programs, how much is given over to Joseph Smith and LDS church leaders, the LDS church starts to sound cultish, insular, and weird, speaking so much in code and talking about anxiety and fear producing topics, e.g., obedience, anxious to serve, anxious to do missionary work, linking church leaders, even at the local level, to God's authority, harping on home and visiting teaching--a lot of themes that seek to make people overstep others' boundaries.

Yes, but this was just some member. It wasn't official doctrine. You misunderstood. You need to go back.

All about Christ at my ward even the youth speaker.

I attended my wife's ward. The first speaker spoke about the atonement. The second speaker spoke about the resurrection. There were three songs sung by different members of the ward, all with Easter themes. They were well done and at least two of the singers were trained singers. Admittedly, the second speaker waxed on about how we know Jesus was resurrected because in addition to the accounts in the gospel which she read, Jesus also appeared to Joseph Smith so often.

Sometimes I wonder if the folks in Utah and Idaho ignore Easter because they don't have to compete with other churches.

I live in Kansas and this didn't seem to stop our lack of Easter. It got mentioned a few times and how "People are totally gonna by this Mormon stuff cuz it's Easter". But no...actual Easter stuff. There might of been a little more since I missed sacrament meeting but IDK? They didn't even sing the two Easter hymns. I highly doubt it.

My ward seems so excited over that new temple to actually talk about anything else.
