I cannot stand how often my Mormon fb friends feel the need to post crap about their religion. I really don't know what to do about it other than delete the really annoying ones. I tend to be pretty non confrontational with them which I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing. Anyways, today there was this article getting posted.
http://www.lds.org/liahona/2007/10/helping-those-who-struggle-with-same-gender-attraction?lang=engI read it and found it disgusting to say the least. In an effort to keep the peace, I thought I'd give my thoughts about it here rather than starting a commenting war.
Theres this part where he tells the kid "dont identify yourself by your sexual feelings". Don't Identify yourself based on your sexual feelings? Coming from a patriarchal church that bases every single duty, class, and expectation on gender and sexuality? And teaches an extreme level of repression and guilt about any and all sexual thoughts and feelings. Also, when did same sex attraction come to equal same sex libido? The LDS church is obsessed with sex, and it is ridiculous for him to say that sexual feelings "aren't that big a part of you".
There's also that part where he says as long as your not acting on the feelings you will be able to enjoy all the blessings of the savior's atonement. (followe by a cute little pun about sitting up "straighter".) Bull. @#$%&. The whole mythology of the religion is based around a man being married to women. You can't attain the highest degree of glory is youre gay.
This whole crap about BYU and Mormons being "totally cool" with the gays (as long as they keep the repression up) is just another piece of there big PR campaign to make Mormons seem more mainstream.
Gaaah
