The rest of the world might be living in the twenty-first century but Mormons seem to be stuck in the past. 1830? 1844? 1890? 1950? 1978? You would think with the best PR men at their disposal the Brethren would be able to get ahead of things instead of clinging to the past but I suspect that they are only really told what they want to hear. They were wrong about civil rights and they are just as wrong on equal rights.

Perhaps we could transport Temple Square back in time to 1885--

Mother to daughters: "Girls, girls, come here. Today we're going to learn about what it was like to be a woman living in the eighteen hundreds.

Daughters: "Really? We're going to have a history lesson?"

Mother: "Actually....we're going to become Mormons."

Daughters: "Nooooooo!!!"

if this is so then how could you seriously think that you can get people living in the twenty-first century to believe that skin colour is a divine curse from God or that women are just pleasure units or mere vessels to bear children? There will come a time when the law recognises that gay people have the same rights as you do -- what will you do then? Will you have another "revelation?" Time and demographics are working against you.

BTW, the next time you or one of your grandchildren has to deal with melanoma then I wonder if you will still think that having melanin in your skin is a divine curse.

Holland says he's read a couple of books and went to a pretty good school. Then he says the reason he's a Mormon is because of "faith" and "inspiration". So what, then, is the point of his education?

Some are very "orthodox" and restrictive, and some are not.

When I was Mormon I was living in the 20th century. For a little bit, I was even living in the 21st century.

I know what you mean, the hard core TBMs just don't seem to fit in anywhere.

It is very difficult to place them in any decade or any century since they proudly "live in the world, but not of the world". It's kind of like they are "slumming" it just to be here at all.

One of my favorite sayings is "Life's a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death" from Auntie Mame. When I was a mormon out in the world I always felt like I was the only person at the table on a very restricted diet, watching everyone else stuff themselves.

I could never see the benefit of not connecting to the world.

I've read some of your posts which I really like, btw.

Wondered if you could email me on a separate topic?

Thanks!

I could never put into words what being Mormon was like but that is a great comparison.

Mormons live in the period when Kimball and Hinckley were enjoying life--roughly 1930 to 1950. That's the period they always referred back to.

Interestingly when the 1950s opened, the President of the Mormon church wore a beard.

Mormonism is the Donny and Marie version of the tv show MadMen - the existential emptiness minus the cigarettes and sex.

The standard joke is that the sign at the Utah state border says:

"Welcome to Utah! Set your clocks back 40 years."

It is not just that they are archiac, but they are so ignorant. They "profess" to have special knowledge, but they are like sheep.

When the prophet has spoken, the thinking has been done. That is out of their own mouths.

For any one person--much less the whole of a mass of people to say that they will discontinue to think upon a subject--is ludicrus to the point of insanity.

Don't question, don't think, don't read anti-Mormon literature.
Obey, obey, obey.

No more of this "not falling into a legally protected class" nonsense. If a woman can marry a dolphin then who cares if guys marry guys or girls marry girls. If you run a public business you can't fire or refuse to serve someone just because they have a beard and wear a turban or born with the wrong parts or don't believe in any god or gods. "Equal rights" means just what it says -- equal rights for all. Either everyone has the same rights or your own rights mean nothing.
