My parents were just called to be "missionaries" for the church to be ushers at the conference center. My wife and I were joking that really they were just called to work at the new mall. I just got done talking to them and guess what there first assignment is. They are going to be ushers at the new mall. It really isn't hard to make a profit when you have slave labor. It really annoys me that they think they are doing the "lord's work" when in reality they are just making money for the church. The church is such a joke and their motivations and priorities are obvious. How easy is it to run a business when you can staff it with free labor. Sorry for the rambling . . .

How do you guilt retired people into slavery? Call it a mission. So many of them feel guilty that they don't want to leave their kids and grandkids and spent a buttload of their own money to serve a senior mission. So the church lets them live in their own homes but still be on a "mission". As an accountant, janitor, usher, security guard, telemarketer or whatever. Then they can say they served a mission. It's criminal. They're a "non-profit" organization (on paper), and call it a "mission" and they skirt every tax law, every labor law and every ethical directive and they have an endless supply of sheeple to pull from. The entire Big 15 belong in prison.

Why does the mall need ushers? Or are they more like WalMart greeters?

Are. You. Effin. Serious? Well, that removes any doubt as to who the mall represents. Those greedy money changers may make their money back yet if they can get nice people to believe that being ushers at a mall for free is serving God. And why does the mall need ushers?

Because if they called them security guards, they would have to pay to train and license them?

Imagine that you are able to build a supermall and overspend on the square footage costs because the money is given by members in servitude. Then you can people the mall with unpaid workers.
You could crush any competition!

And I haven't even mentioned that millions of church members will automatically prefer the mall. They know that they paid for it. They know it's a Mormon enterprise. They're ethnocentric like nobody's business.

I thought that we had anti-trust laws.

Yeah, imagine you had rigged city and statewide government to protect you from the consequences of breaking the law or simply structured all laws in your favor.

The mall needs ushers so it can explain why a supposedly Christian church is actively engaged in such a worldly pursuit and has built a huge building for the amazement and admiration of the world.

To attract the wealthy to the New Babylon - it requires explaining!

Sure, but I still don't understand how you "usher" people in a mall? Ushers make sense in a theater to help people find their seat, but what do they do in a mall? Usher people toward Deseret Books? Usher people away from the bar area at TGIF?

Is there a conference overflow theater in the mall? Is there a movie theater at the mall that will be used as conference overflow? Or are they manning the information booth in the mall?

My guess: a mormon usher is a (possibly) toned-down mormon missionary. It's bad PR to have "missionaries" loose in the mall - calling them "ushers" gives a bit of cover.

Will probably nose around to make sure that people are "properly dressed" and no same-sex couples are daring to look like same-sex couples.

all of the above except Security Guard;

even the Morg wouldn't be stupid enought to place people in those functions without training & back-up.... Right?

Why would they need training? If tbey catch some one stealing they can just raise their arm to the square and command them to stop or be struck down by the power of God!

I can assure you that most big businesses view security as window dressing, and wish to hire those for those positions at as minimal a cost as possible. Training takes time and money corporations would rather not spend.

Those so called "ushers" are really mormon church spies and will be on the lookout for gays or anyone whose clothing the mormon church doesn't like.

Ah so they will "usher" undesirables away from church property.

Really? This is abuse, just plain elderly abuse by a heartless corporation.

Can you talk some sense into your parents? I hate seeing the old couples being used this way. Once thing is to be ushers at temple square or the conference centre, as much as that is a waste of time. But to shamelessly ask them to help in a mall, that's just.... I don't even have a word for it... sick... evil.... shameless....

I wish I could talk to them about it. I could actually tell in the way they told me that they think it is kind of weird. They just barely received their call so they are very postive about the whole thing right now. So I am not sure that talking to them about it right now would be very productive. If it continues to happen then I might ask them how they really feal about it but I don't think they will allow themselves to have anything negative to say about it.

Is this in writing anywhere? I would love to see the actual call if you have access to it.

I doubt the call says they have been called to the SLC City Creek Mission.

Agreed. No one here is big on the mall, but if this is true, I'd need more explanation before I swallowed it.

Like I said in OP, they were called to be missionaries for the conference center. That was what there call said. I talked to them yesterday and they said that there next weekend they are going to be in charge of directing people from the parking lot to the elevators and to where they need to go. I promise I am not lying. Maybe usher isn't the proper term but someone directing you to where you want to go seems to be an usher to me.

I was a little suprised that they were going to be doing this as well. It almost doesn't seem like it is possible but I promise that it really is happening.

Taubman is the property manager of this mall. THe church won't have much say into the day-to-day operations of the Mall.

Taubmanalso has a financial stake in the Mall, they are not going to allow missionaries running around as ushers.

But I could see them working an information booth.

Perhaps they are going to be ushers for the grand opening ceremony program, whenever that happens.

I can see them being ushers for a ceremony. Otherwise they'd simply be glorified Wal-mart greeters. Kind of pointless in a mall.

They also might man (or woman) the information desk. (Our malls tend to have those.)

Perhaps what is coming is members being called to clean the mall.

You have to remember their target customers are the very wealthy. They are used to pulling up to a door, being helped out, car parked valet-style, concierge to answer questions, bellhop to carry stuff and be obsequious.

The GA's, being the entitled themselves, know what people of high status expect. There will be golf carts for groups of the gilded and electronic maps they pass out that show via GPS "you are here."

The elderly parents are Watchers. They are go give personal service and report back any heathens or undesirables, just be Watchers in case any of us show up with rude T-shirts.

It occurred to me that the rerouting of City Creek and the stocking it with fish also fits into my theory that the whole thing is a front for a survival city for God's elect.

Conference center mission? Doesn't the church only use the conference center a few times a year? What do they do the rest of the time? They are probably calling it the Conference Center Mission, in order to cover up their tie in with the Mall.

and they use missionaries as tour guides and to stand around and answer questions people have about the Conference Center.
