Dustin Black has been interviewed by Fresh Air's host before, but this is a new interview, dated 2/24/2012.

Black discusses his movie about J. Edgar Hoover. About halfway through the interview, his mormon past is brought up.

Dustin talks about staying firmly in the closet as a matter of survival when he was still part of the mormon community. He makes the point that other gay men in the USA may not have as personal an understanding of what J. Edgar went through (assuming he was gay), because most communities are now more accepting of their gay citizens. Not so in most mormon communities.

There's also discussion of Clint Eastwood's view of "gay" and what it means to him.

That part of the talk reminded me of the many ways in which mormon communities hark back to the 1950s or earlier for the basis of their culture.
